What a great day of digging it turned out to be! Me and a good friend Evan worked a site to death for about two hours and did not get anything but shotgun shells. We went across the ridge to some 1800s log cabins, and started detecting. In the past, nothing significant has been dug around that area. Someone had cleared around the cabins with a skidsteer, so we were getting lots of signals. Neither of us dug anything old, but as we were about to call it a night, I got a great high tone on my AT Gold. I dug a hole, and expecting a coin, I was shocked to see a button at the bottom of the hole. I picked it up and it was clearly a South Carolina state seal button! I have never dug an old button like this with so much relief! I am glad to have such a beautiful example for my FIRST EVER SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SEAL BUTTON!!!!! I am so happy to be able to cross this one off the list. I did not think I would EVER get one. It has the HT&B MANCHESTER backmark. These buttons were made during the Civil War in Europe, for the Confederacy! Thanks for looking and enjoy the pictures!

I saw Aluminum Jelly mentioned on BuckleBoy's page (I think it was) regarding the cleaning of buttons...I'd love to try it. Is it different than Naval Jelly? Also would love to know how our friend FIN "drycleans" his buttons.

Regards, Erik

Dry cleaning with a toothbrush on a gilded button can actually strip the gilding off. Aluminum jelly and lots of time and careful cleaning will leave the gilding intact. I dry clean non-gilded eagles and flat buttons, but the gilded ones get aluminum jelly. Take a look at my post in the Cleaning and Preservation section on "How To Clean Buttons," or my Western and Eastern Treasures article on the same topic from earlier in the year. GREAT find!

Best Wishes,

Buck

That is one beauty...

Awesome button. Great look...I'd leave it as is...but that's just me. I'd have to have it in-hand to determine whether it's a candidate for the jelly or not...don't see any gilt from the pics. As with ANY cleaning....always proceed with caution, patience, and care.

Beautiful SC button!

Very nice button. It looks like new as far as detail goes. Keep up the finds.

I will contact you next time I come up to Hillsborough. I have two old homesites on my father in laws place up near Lake Orange I have been wanting to hunt. The problem for me is getting up there for more than a day.

We even have an old homeplace on my wifes land just northeast of Mebane. I haven't hunted any of these with a good machine, or patience, so there should be some good finds.

Hey guys i know yall want me to clean it but I am going to leave it as is. I have dug lots and lots of buttons, and I know what it looks like when a button has gilt underneath. This is patina'ed brass you are seeing, and I think it is more beautiful this way as opposed to seeing a few lines of gold.

fantastic find......wtg
