Checking out thecolonel's idea of "Vacuum Snipe-ing" Looks Promising! UPDATE! X 3!!

Ok, after seeing thecolonel's posts this last week and the video today:

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/358411-video-snipe-ing-paydirt.html

I Ran town to a car wash close by....damn...all the vacuum's bins were locked (6 of them too in a well used place!) There is a dumpster in the corner but didn't "dive" in as I wasn't really dressed for it and it was spur of the moment. DID however remember another location that I could try and BINGO! 4 of them all unlocked and all with a fair amount in them. Used my hand held gator tool to scrape the bottom and edges of each one (had leather work gloves on) and got 3 good sized bags full. Looks like enough to fill at least a 5 gal bucket, maybe more. Coins were EVERYWHERE. Could see and hear them scraping the bottom! I even saw what looked like a good sized clear, cut stone but it fell into the bag (find it later i hope!) First impression was it was fake but only got a quick look. Have started looking through some of the dirt and will post any finds later tonight or tomorrow. I'm using the small mesh sifter I built along with a larger holed gold pan (classifier?) that will keep coins and larger item in place, in all the hair and fuzz of course! Washing all the dirt through the 2 screens then plan on dumping them on an old towel and sorting through them. Wish me luck! I really think thecolonel is on to something here!

UPDATE:
Here are the "finds" from the bags I brought back.
20130607_235650.webp20130608_001550.webp20130608_001600.webp20130608_001603.webp20130608_001639.webp20130608_001703.webp20130608_001743.webp

This is the leftovers from the mesh sifter.

Donned the rubber gloves and got to work. I used the classifier and the mesh sifter to sort through it all. Rinsed it all down with water to cut prevent dust and dirt from going everywhere and it worked pretty well too to break up clumps of hair and fuzz. Did it a pan at a time. Poured some outta the bag, rinsed and sifted using the classifier pan. All of the smaller crap fell through it onto the mesh screen then I rinsed and sifted that a bit. Saved all the smaller stuff to pick through later when it dries (or may just toss it) just to see if there are any small earrings or stones that may have escaped their settings. In total I pulled $7.27 in clad, some junk jewelry and some other stuff. $7.27 isn't bad when you figure that it is more than my highest one time total of $5.85 in clad from 4 hours of detecting. Also found one small clear stone, prob glass but will test it to be sure. Took me all of 15 mins to clean out the 4 vac units and about an hour to sift through it all. I'd say thecolonel has come up with a great idea. I may keep a 5 gal bucket and garden trowel in the back of the car from now on and check one or two out from time to time. Could be some good future finds!

Note: I was VERY careful when sifting through the stuff. I used a long screwdriver to stir it around in the pan and held the sides of the pan. After getting all the dirt out, I'd dump it on an old towel and start picking through it. most of the coins worked their way to the bottom of the pan so they ended up on top of the "furry pancake" of hair, trash and coins that was left. Used an old knife or screwdriver to poke through it and after it was all broken apart then I'd use gloved hands, carefully, to feel for more coins or other stuff. All in all it worked out pretty well! Thanks for looking!

Awesome. Post your finds!

How dog gone interesting! A new way of thinking outside of the box, err, bin. Do be careful of the syringe needles, ouch, and you never know who has what when related to those things......................63bkpkr

Definitely looks gross, but there is money in there!

LOL

This reminds me of a video I watched about a guy that scrapes the dirt between sidewalk tiles in New York and finds diamonds...

More power to ya :icon_thumright:

watching to see results.very interested in how well you will do been watching the colonel's posts also.

Nice DocBeav.

Very cool to see the interest in this method of treasure hunting. Snipe-ing is definately fun...and interesting. Though you never know what you are going to find, you will find something. It seems that you are finding EXACTLY the same mix of stuff that I am finding here in New Hampshire. Did you find toe nail clippings yet? ha ha. That was my lowest point! I take it slow so the fun lasts longer. No need to speed it up.

this is taking off!, lol i thought about it but cant get over the thought of getting in trouble. proble cause im just a worrywert but Id think that the owners possibly do this already thats why they lock the bins?

Its normal to worry. BUT the ones I snipe are unlocked and belong to publicly traded companies, (ie. Mobil and Exxon stations, etc.) Mom and pop operations do lock theres for some sort of extra return. I respect them and would ask for permission. The rest is fair game if not posted. Just do not bring undue attention to yourself or the hobby.

Very smart thinking. I was in the same boat. The one I went to yesterday was on a military base and they are all unlocked and I'm sure the person who has to clean them out (not that often from what I could see!) would only be too happy to see it was already done! I hit another there today, only one pan full of material but here is what I got:

$1.27 in clad and the other stuff. Not bad for the 2 mins it took to hose it down and pull and wash the change! I think the best time to go to any of these places would be after the weekend (like Sun evening) or on rainy crummy days when people aren't using them or the car wash areas. More chance for finds and less people to look at you like you are some kinda whack job.

Got my first silver dime today out of a very wet mix. It was just a matter of time! A 1957 Roosie

Ha ha...sorry friend. Hope you were able to finish your dinner.

i suppose if you just hose em off while they are in the screed its all good, heck we dig em out of the dirt, but i guess we dont worry about the coins being mixed w/ french fries, hair and cheerios while theyre in the ground lol

nice finds congrats HH

Yeah LOTS of french fries, hair and cheerios! By the time i'm done, I've washed all the dust, dirt and other crap out of it. Still not a "clean" experience but I'll keep my gloves on! Not touching that mess with out them!

My wife is gonna think I am crazy when I bring home a bucket of this stuff! lol

I actually have not ever seen them unlocked but if I did I would definitely try it.

When i was much younger i worked at a Super Sunoco gas station 7 years we had 2 pay vacuum,s every Sunday the same lady would come in to clean out her car a nice Porsche and vacuum it fill it with gas etc. , the next day we got a call from her that she thinks she sucked up her tennis bracelet in the vacuum machine could we look for it , well i went out side and unlocked the machine and dumped out all the crap in a bag and started looking sure enough it was there the bracelet a nice one to BLING !!! A Tiffanie's 18k 4 diamond 2 ruby,s $ 6000.00 bracelet and that was back in the early 1970,s i got a 20.00 reward lol , hey back then 20 bucks was a lot . ever since that happened while at the station i always looked into the machine after emptying it a lot of coins and junk .
