Checking out thecolonel's idea of "Vacuum Snipe-ing" Looks Promising! UPDATE! X 3!!

Ok, after seeing thecolonel's posts this last week and the video today:

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/358411-video-snipe-ing-paydirt.html

I Ran town to a car wash close by....damn...all the vacuum's bins were locked (6 of them too in a well used place!) There is a dumpster in the corner but didn't "dive" in as I wasn't really dressed for it and it was spur of the moment. DID however remember another location that I could try and BINGO! 4 of them all unlocked and all with a fair amount in them. Used my hand held gator tool to scrape the bottom and edges of each one (had leather work gloves on) and got 3 good sized bags full. Looks like enough to fill at least a 5 gal bucket, maybe more. Coins were EVERYWHERE. Could see and hear them scraping the bottom! I even saw what looked like a good sized clear, cut stone but it fell into the bag (find it later i hope!) First impression was it was fake but only got a quick look. Have started looking through some of the dirt and will post any finds later tonight or tomorrow. I'm using the small mesh sifter I built along with a larger holed gold pan (classifier?) that will keep coins and larger item in place, in all the hair and fuzz of course! Washing all the dirt through the 2 screens then plan on dumping them on an old towel and sorting through them. Wish me luck! I really think thecolonel is on to something here!

UPDATE:
Here are the "finds" from the bags I brought back.
20130607_235650.webp20130608_001550.webp20130608_001600.webp20130608_001603.webp20130608_001639.webp20130608_001703.webp20130608_001743.webp

This is the leftovers from the mesh sifter.

Donned the rubber gloves and got to work. I used the classifier and the mesh sifter to sort through it all. Rinsed it all down with water to cut prevent dust and dirt from going everywhere and it worked pretty well too to break up clumps of hair and fuzz. Did it a pan at a time. Poured some outta the bag, rinsed and sifted using the classifier pan. All of the smaller crap fell through it onto the mesh screen then I rinsed and sifted that a bit. Saved all the smaller stuff to pick through later when it dries (or may just toss it) just to see if there are any small earrings or stones that may have escaped their settings. In total I pulled $7.27 in clad, some junk jewelry and some other stuff. $7.27 isn't bad when you figure that it is more than my highest one time total of $5.85 in clad from 4 hours of detecting. Also found one small clear stone, prob glass but will test it to be sure. Took me all of 15 mins to clean out the 4 vac units and about an hour to sift through it all. I'd say thecolonel has come up with a great idea. I may keep a 5 gal bucket and garden trowel in the back of the car from now on and check one or two out from time to time. Could be some good future finds!

Note: I was VERY careful when sifting through the stuff. I used a long screwdriver to stir it around in the pan and held the sides of the pan. After getting all the dirt out, I'd dump it on an old towel and start picking through it. most of the coins worked their way to the bottom of the pan so they ended up on top of the "furry pancake" of hair, trash and coins that was left. Used an old knife or screwdriver to poke through it and after it was all broken apart then I'd use gloved hands, carefully, to feel for more coins or other stuff. All in all it worked out pretty well! Thanks for looking!

Got me some today! Haven't even got through half of it and found a wheat penny and a silver pearl earring! Second silver find for the year.

Ha ha...fantastic. what do you think of the colonel now? Wad I lying?

UPDATE #3:
Yesterday, after a very UNsuccessful beach hunt up in Buckroe, I decided to do some vacuum snipe-ing on the way home to salvage the day. I saw a vacuum with the side door open and pulled in to check it out. Looking inside, it appeared to have been recently cleaned but still had some dirt from people who had used it since and a small pile that was cemented on one side that had to be scrapped out with the digger. It was a relatively small amount (less than 1/4 bucket). I looked to see If I had missed anything and I noticed that the ground right in front of the door had coins in the dirt! From all the clean-outs that have been done, some of it always ended on the ground! I dug out about 2 inches down in this area and added it to the bucket. Saw coins and some earrings that were getting scooped up with the rest of it. Ended up with about 1/2 a bucket from here and got just a bit less than that at one of the ones I hit the other day.

Ended up with $2.14 in clad and all the earrings and bling you see. Haven't tested any of it yet (most likely not worth anything) but it shows there is some stuff that can be found.

Fantastic. Ha ha I hope you didn't leave a gaoeing hole. Awesome way to salvage the day.

LEGOS!!! This actually looks awesome, I'm gonna have to try this out up by the gas station! Congrats and HH!

Cool Jim! $6k eh...wow man imagine how much its worth NOW!

OK, decided to check the vacuums I hit the other day while on an errand. All were still empty but 1 and it only had maybe a pan full. I washed it out today and found these:

The 1933 wheat penny looks to be worth $2-$35! I'd say the condition is pretty good, has wear but still has nice detail and you can see the marks in the sheaves of wheat.

The other is a 1971 off center strike error penny! Not worth a whole lot but looks like $2-$5. Still ALOT more than face value.

Don't just count the change you get LOOK at it, you may catch something cool!

Was out running some errands todaycand on my way to a local park to detect for a bit. Decided to hit a few places along the way and see if there might be something worth while in the vacuums. Wasn't too bad!

Good amount of clad and some bling to boot! Hoping for some real gold and silver one of these days!

Its coming. Be patient.]

Sniped for the first time yesterday after I sucked some change up in my vacuum cleaning out my truck and it reminded me of this thread. Went down to the car wash and 6 out of the 8 machines were locked up. I grabbed what was in the other 2 and it was only 2 inches in the bucket. Took it home and found $1.43 in change and a pearl ear ring with the back still attached. There is definetly possibilities here and it had the same feeling as digging through a new dug hole. Lol

I feel exactly the same way! Get all excited over what you may find!

Thanks to the colonel, I will never have to buy M&Ms, Skittles, toothpicks, fake fingernails{sooooo pretty} and car fuses again. It is true! M&Ms melt in your mouth not in the vacuum. steve

very cool idea

Very cool to see the interest in this method of treasure hunting. Snipe-ing is definately fun...and interesting. Though you never know what you are going to find, you will find something. It seems that you are finding EXACTLY the same mix of stuff that I am finding here in New Hampshire. Did you find toe nail clippings yet? ha ha. That was my lowest point! I take it slow so the fun lasts longer. No need to speed it up.

Yeah but what if they were Maria Sharapova's nail clippings? Fat chance but it doesn't hurt to dream! LOL!!!

Do whatever you feel you have to to GET PAID, But i'm pretty sure this gig is not for everyone . GOOD LUCK

Thanks To thecolonel I have been inspired to do this again. I haven't done it for a few years, but got my buckets, gloves, dust pan & brush, a 4" wide mud knife along with some paper facemasks. Headed out to the car washes. I hit 8 of them last night and found 6 vacuums that were not locked. I filled one 5 gal bucket and one 2 1/2 gal bucket. I did the sniping just before sundown. it took about an hour in all. at the end I was using a flashlight to see what I was doing. No one seemed to pay any attention and I was glad, plus it was cooler in the evening or should I say night? I'm going to go through the stuff this evening. I'll post my finds after the clean out.:happysmiley:

With the new found popularity of this thread that the colonel started , we may have to begin a new subforum - I guess we could call it
"workin at the car wash " !
