Checking out thecolonel's idea of "Vacuum Snipe-ing" Looks Promising! UPDATE! X 3!!

Ok, after seeing thecolonel's posts this last week and the video today:

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/358411-video-snipe-ing-paydirt.html

I Ran town to a car wash close by....damn...all the vacuum's bins were locked (6 of them too in a well used place!) There is a dumpster in the corner but didn't "dive" in as I wasn't really dressed for it and it was spur of the moment. DID however remember another location that I could try and BINGO! 4 of them all unlocked and all with a fair amount in them. Used my hand held gator tool to scrape the bottom and edges of each one (had leather work gloves on) and got 3 good sized bags full. Looks like enough to fill at least a 5 gal bucket, maybe more. Coins were EVERYWHERE. Could see and hear them scraping the bottom! I even saw what looked like a good sized clear, cut stone but it fell into the bag (find it later i hope!) First impression was it was fake but only got a quick look. Have started looking through some of the dirt and will post any finds later tonight or tomorrow. I'm using the small mesh sifter I built along with a larger holed gold pan (classifier?) that will keep coins and larger item in place, in all the hair and fuzz of course! Washing all the dirt through the 2 screens then plan on dumping them on an old towel and sorting through them. Wish me luck! I really think thecolonel is on to something here!

UPDATE:
Here are the "finds" from the bags I brought back.
20130607_235650.webp20130608_001550.webp20130608_001600.webp20130608_001603.webp20130608_001639.webp20130608_001703.webp20130608_001743.webp

This is the leftovers from the mesh sifter.

Donned the rubber gloves and got to work. I used the classifier and the mesh sifter to sort through it all. Rinsed it all down with water to cut prevent dust and dirt from going everywhere and it worked pretty well too to break up clumps of hair and fuzz. Did it a pan at a time. Poured some outta the bag, rinsed and sifted using the classifier pan. All of the smaller crap fell through it onto the mesh screen then I rinsed and sifted that a bit. Saved all the smaller stuff to pick through later when it dries (or may just toss it) just to see if there are any small earrings or stones that may have escaped their settings. In total I pulled $7.27 in clad, some junk jewelry and some other stuff. $7.27 isn't bad when you figure that it is more than my highest one time total of $5.85 in clad from 4 hours of detecting. Also found one small clear stone, prob glass but will test it to be sure. Took me all of 15 mins to clean out the 4 vac units and about an hour to sift through it all. I'd say thecolonel has come up with a great idea. I may keep a 5 gal bucket and garden trowel in the back of the car from now on and check one or two out from time to time. Could be some good future finds!

Note: I was VERY careful when sifting through the stuff. I used a long screwdriver to stir it around in the pan and held the sides of the pan. After getting all the dirt out, I'd dump it on an old towel and start picking through it. most of the coins worked their way to the bottom of the pan so they ended up on top of the "furry pancake" of hair, trash and coins that was left. Used an old knife or screwdriver to poke through it and after it was all broken apart then I'd use gloved hands, carefully, to feel for more coins or other stuff. All in all it worked out pretty well! Thanks for looking!

Nasty. Lol. Are you sure it was water? :)

Wait till you open up the wet one that is wiggling with maggots. Damn things ate my M&Ms. steve

Nice! Maggots. Have not seen that one yet. I even have the wife working it with me. Good fun.

Good one Steve! You should be a comedian!

You know the homeless might be doing the same thing. That one that was wet might have been the guy relieving himself after taking all the change out or he just spilled his beer.

Taste Great! Less Filling!

Yeah, I haven't had any with standing water yet but a few that were damp, a little muddy. The doors on those things are not always closed all the way or have the best seal. What I have found though is, that the ones that end up that way eventually dry and create a whole new layer on the bottom, and keep all the coins and stuff stuck in it. Next time the vacuum gets cleaned out by employees, they sweep out the dry stuff and leave the damp or dried dirt in the bottom.

What has been working well is taking my hand held digger along (small hand garden shovel will work too) and scraping the inside and really scrape to get the dried stuff on the bottom and along the edges. Don't miss those edges, lots of stuff gets stuck there and the cursory cleaning they do get misses stuff. Don't just peek in and say it's empty, get your (gloved) hands in there and feel around. I have found a couple vacuums now that looked like they were empty but when I got my hands inside, there were nice clumps stuck on one side or another and all had stuff in them.

Tried my first today $2.90 richer than I was, no bling but it will come. The one I checked with permission granted no problem, had a rubber cone shaped basket full of the rubbish all I had to do was dump in bucket and go.

You may not want to forget the Trash cans, Beside the Vacuum's

On many occasions when I would pull up to the drive though at BK, or Mic'D's
They would take my $20. & at the same time they hand me the change,
they hand my my meal.
because My hands are full & the soda is coming next,
I will sometimes drop all my change in the bag, Grab the soda,
& pull out. After riding down the highway eating my meal,
I crumble the bag shut & throw it on the Passenger floor.

I know for a fact more then once, I forgot change of some type,
in the bottom of the bags, when cleaning my car out.

Just saying If I do it, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Great. The coned bowl should always be replaced sitting flat in the canister. Makes it easier and keeps things drier....usually.

I remember cleaning the vacuum when I worked at a oil change place 16 years ago. So I have experiance and was not afraid :) the only one I found unlocked was non functional no hose ect but was packed! got 2 plastic grocery bags of material done sorting the first bag and am almost $2 richer plus this little suprise136.webp138.webp140.webp
10K white gold AFJC marked pretty excited when I saw this sitting in the bag as I sorted.

That is GREAT man! Hoping to find something like that myself.....hitting a few between tomorrow and sun...we will se how it goes but congrats on the ring!

It's definitely workin', I went through my buckets today and worked up a sweat. though it wasn't too bad with the wind out of the south. I sat down wind from the buckets. LOL:goldpan: No gold in my pan, but found some cold hard cash. Ok so I have tried to upload pictures but having trouble. I haven't done this before, so if there's any one out there that can help, I would appreciate some tutoring. Thanks.

Everyone I've been by to check has either a lock on it or a thick plastic zip tie. Apparently they know there are goodies in there.

Go to the store, buy thick plastic ties. Cut off tie on vacuums, empty contents in 5 gallon bucket, replace vacuum bin, shut door, install new thick plastic tie. You get the loot, it saves the owner work. You get caught tell them you think you sucked up your mailbox key or whatever. Problem solved! Now the locked ones your on your own.

Nice find. Dont you love snipe-ing?

That's very true! I should have put an lol at the end as I was joking. Even the unlocked ones are not an invitation to take what's in them. I realize its unwanted garbage people vacuum up but it is on someone's property and it belongs to them so ask permission first!
