Dectecting a small in the wood at the back of my house today in valley Cottage NY and found a small hoard of Chinese coins. I was really surprised because I live in a suburb where nothing ever happened and the oldest houses are from the 1960's. I guess you just never really know...

I asked myself the same question when I found a few Chinese Cash Coins a few years ago.
Why am I finding Chinese Coins from the late 1700's early 1800's in the yard of a 1950's house in Ohio

These coins had no real value so many of them were used as decorations on various items.
They were often added to the tops of Sewing Baskets in the 1940's - 50's era.
The people living there burned or threw the Basket out and we end up finding the coins years later.

Also, there are a few web sites you can go to to date your coins. '
Just Google the key words - "Dating Chinese Coins" and match your coins to the photo's.

The coin shown was minted in Manchu, during the rein of emperor Kao Tsung, AD 1736-1795

We use to see those baskets quite often while antique picking in the 70s.
Haven't seen one for 40 yrs now.
