Hello,

Being new to this, I have an awful lot to learn. Can anyone look at these pictures and tell me whether or not these are some sort of debitage? I have photos showing both sides of the pieces. I'm most interested in the piece that I believe to be obsidian. Does it look like flakes may have been taken off of it? Please put in your two pennies everyone, thanks in advance.

From what I can see, most of them look like debitage, and #12 might be a point with some damage. What part of the country did you find them in? HH

Chips and brokes is what I see. This is my pile I have gotten so far. I have to go through it all to make sure there are no tools but most of it is going in a hole in my backyard in the winter.

lol I know, but I'm trying. This isn't the easiest thing to learn on your own, I only have three whole points to show for over a year of looking. I'll get there eventually.

Do you think flakes to make points might have been taken off the obsidian?

I'm pretty sure what you think is obsidian is actually slag glass. It's a byproduct of blacksmith work. It tends to have a yellowish tent when held to the light. #12 on your chart looks like an arrowhead with a broken tip. Nice stuff!!

I agree completely with NC Field Hunter. There was a lot of iron ore slag like that around site of the old Harford Furnace, where I grew up at in Harford County, Maryland. I wish I had kept some of it, as it occurred in a lot of interesting variations, depending upon the impurities in the ore they were cooking down.

I had no clue that 12 was a broken point, I'm shocked, thanks guys.
