We finally got some more rain so I went out to hit some recently turned over fields. I think these are chips left over from some tool making. The material is right for our area, Monterey chert. My friend found the tip of a point but other than that nothing remarkable. I guess they could be plow strikes but the material doesn't come from that immediate area and my buddy, who is an experienced artifact hunter, said they looked napped on the edges. Lots of shell debris too. I scored the abalone she'll in the same area. The porcelain pieces are obviously modern and the earring was found near the parking lot. I'm new to the artifact hunting thing and would like to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks! Quite a few look like they have worked edges to me.But I am not seasoned either. These guys should be able to let you know

That is worked stone for sure, keep looking in the area and you will find a point.

Lets see the bigger piece 3rd pic bottom right its thick and has nice colors. Might be something not sure.

Cool. I can't say anything there is an artifact, but it does appear to be workable material. One of the indicators for a village site in Oklahoma was the presence of mussel shell, as they used them for food and used the shell to temper pottery. I've found pieces of abalone shell in western Oklahoma too, which gives you an idea of the extent of the trade network in America B.C.

The area was definitely used by the natives. Many of the coastal terraces used to have huge shell mounds. Over the years many of them have been plowed into the fields or carted away by poultry farmers. The soil composition in this area is very different from other nearby fields and there are millions of shell fragments around. Here are some better pics of the large piece.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1427254291.224708.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1427254314.376029.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1427254333.860738.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1427254449.753808.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1427254585.800095.webp
There was a small piece of obsidian too, which I read that the Ohlones traded for from Napa Valley natives. Thanks for the input...I feel a new addiction brewing...

Nice color I think it might be either a scraper or a core. A keeper

You're definitely in the right area and it sounds like you know it ..
you are finding artifacts I see definite signs of the hand of man in a lot of those pieces besides some worked edges the ripples in this piece were formed from shock waves traveling through the material by percussion

I've just been doing some reading on our area. I would love to find some other places to look as well but at this point it's all theory. There is a new development going in in Scott's Valley, which is near to me. Apparently that whole area used to be a big lake and in the 70's some of the University archaeologists found evidence of extensive use dating back nearly 10,000 years. I guess I'll try that and then follow the creek drainage down from there. It seems like as good a place to start as any. Thank you all for the input and hopefully I will have more to show soon!
