Church Yard Sale Finds

My church recently had a huge yard sale. Anyone who belonged to the church could donate their unwanted stuff, and the church had the sale on the front lawn. Got a couple little treasures. The Jack Daniels clock was still in its original unopened box. Got it for $10. The original price tag on it said $50.The little jewelry box I got for $4. The Delft vase was 25 cents, the Ironstone wall hanger was $2, the L.L Bean satchel was 50 cents, found the same model on their website for $65. Actually found 2 pennies in the bag :laughing9=: anyway, think it was a pretty good day. I would really appreciate any help on value or information on the vases. I would really like some info on the boy scout pin. Age? Why it was made? Thanks!

Cool clock. Here's one that sold for $108.50 recently- Jack Daniels Clock | eBay Though completed listings prices have been conflicted and varied for me lately. Seems prices are all over the place for identical items. Wow! Thanks diggum!! Sharp as a tack there! Thanks for all the great info! Really pleased about the clock. That pin also seems pretty desirable. Any idea why the P on mine is red? Another fake? Im also glad I learned the Ironware was a fake before I tried to sell it, and someone got mad at me.

I did a little more checking, it's called a "life scout pin". I don't think this is something that would have been faked. I think it's more than likely either a production error or caused from wear. Does yours have any kind of backmark on it? The type of closure will help date it also. These pins are often referred to as "mothers" pins but in actuality they are related to the "life scout" badge, which is a particular rank of scout. If you scroll down on this link you'll see what i'm referring to- Insignia Guide: Boy Scout Advancement

An actual "mother's pin" is given to an eagle scout in his award kit upon receiving the rank. It looks totally different and says mom on it.

Here is some more info on the badges/pins-

In the 1910s, a Life Scout was ranked below a Star Scout. The Boy Scouts of America issued cloth Life Scout badges as early as 1913. Prior to then it is unclear what Boy Scouts were awarded, if anything. Beginning in the middle to late 1910s, Life Scouts could also purchase red enameled heart-shaped pins to wear when in civilian dress. There were two styles of Life Scout cloth badges issued in the 1910s, the first with a small knot inside of the heart and the second with a long, red, hanging knot.

Nice Boy Scout pin. My oldest son is an Eagle Scout. I have never seen a Mom's pin like this one. Perhaps this is an older version as today's mother's pins are not enameled. Nice finds.

Scratch that last thought of mine. The locking C clasp was invented in 1910, I thought it was later.

Actually, there are 2 different versions currently available in the BSA Scout Shops. One is a Life Scout Pin, to be given to the Scout on achieving the rank of Life. The other version, which is smaller than the Life Scout Pin, is the "Life, metal miniature pin, No. 00123, mother, civilian wear". Also known as a Life Scout "Mother's Pin". If it's about 3/4" tall, it's a mother's pin. If it's about an inch, it's a Life Scout Pin.

Like what I'm hearin on the clock! I didn't keep the box or any of the packaging because I planned oust keeping it (I have been wanting a wall hanging clock for a while). Do you think I would still be able to sell it just with the clock for a good price?

If I knew you were looking for a life scout pin, I would have sold you mine for a quarter That pin dates to the 60's and probably early 70's. I have no clue if, or when they changed them as I left in 72

But here's a little heads up for you too. If you run across any patches, they are worth even more than the pins. They will include merit badges (especially vintage ones from 50's-70's) as even the merit badges have changed design over the years. But the real money is in specific camp patches, Jamboree patches and OA (Order of the Arrow) patches/sashes can run big bucks to collectors

Yeah, i've sold a few of those myself.

Rule of thumb for the OP... Never throw away a box. I've got boxes stored in storage to things around my house, just in case I decide to resell at a later date. You can still sell it but the box always increases the value.

Just for the fun of it I went to the BSA website to see the current badges. Man things have changed, I have merit badges that no longer exist There are so many new ones, I won't even know where to start
