Yes, and I see a date at bottom middle of 1850 I believe.

That is mass. State shield and motto on whatever it is.

After a little searching, I believe this to have the Massachusetts State seal on it. I dug this near Williamsburg Va.

Looks similar to the Massachusetts state seal. What does the back look like?

Thanks for the picture. It is a little out of focus but I think I can see three attachment points, one on each end and one in the bottom middle. Maybe a hat badge?
