Digging in and around a 1800's foundation I unearthed a very long bayonet. I was beyond shocked as this is not something I was expecting to find (will look good in the relic room)

How are you going about it?
As in cleaning.


I have used electrolysis in the past but in this case the rust is not all that deep and I want to keep some of it on there. I am using a soft wire bits to get the bigger flakes off and will then give it a bath in boiling paraffin wax. I am certain every museum curator would object. :)
 

From what it looks like on the online picture, their touch mark is on the base of the spine.
You definitely could do some damage with that thing, it’s practically a short sword.
That is sweet find, can’t get much better than that with iron relics and it will clean up great.

its a little pitted in that part but maybe something will appear with some additional clean. Its a stiff sharp blade for sure...hate to get stuck with that in battle
