Okay, my detecting partner took me to the Bedford area today to detect his cabin area.
His relatives settled on this land in the early 1800's. We thought we would be into some old coins,
but it was tough hunting due to all the trash from two hundred years. He got a real nice indian cent
and I got a 17 and 36 wheats. That was it for older coins.
BUT close to the foundation I dug this buckle.
My partner said one of his relatives fought in the Civil war and then returned to live at the homestead
afterwards, so I think it's real

Good looking buckle -- looks real to me ...

Looks real to me TOO!!!
That is the dream of most, if not ALL of us relic hunters.
Congratulations.

Very nice lead filled US Buckle. The arrow back model was standard during the war of Northern Aggression Many soldiers carved their name or initials on the back in the soft material.. Might pay to gently clean it up some to see if those marks can be deciphered . I am very envious

Nice buckle. I believe it is a real civil war buckle.

Flyflaps, if you've found what it looks like you've found, it's the holy grail of Civil War diggers. Would you do us a favor and post a picture of it cleaned up?

Thanks - Noodle

As Civilman1 says looks like it has something ending in .....AN?? But its up-side-down. As its lead be careful cleaning it anymore as it normally takes off the detail instead of bring it up.

Welcome to Tnet from the UK.

YEP, THATS A REAL ONE ALRIGHT. I'VE FOUND OVER 50 BUCKLES OVER 30 YEARS OF HUNTING. NICE FIND. GOT SOME CARVING ON THE BACK. THAT MAKES IT MORE VALUABLE. CONGRATS.   :3some: :headbang: :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav:

Thanks for the replies everbody.
This is something I thought I would never find.

Any ideas on the best way to clean it up a bit?

There is some carving in the lead back. Looks like there's a W, but can't make out the rest.
Also, there is a small blob of lead where the other hook is supposed to be, like he might have tried to
repair it.

I wouldn't clean it anymore what it is. You can see a good face and a nice, carved back. Plus, I like to keep some of the dirt on my relics.. :)

I would leave it as is.
