The site that we are on consists of multiple Civil War military camps that were first occupied by the Confederates, but were abandoned as the Sherman's troops got closer. As the Union came across these abandoned Confederate camps, they used them. They were often located near existing homesites at the time which made food and water easier to obtain. So this is why we are finding both Confederate and Union artifacts at this site. It is really an awe inspiring experience to be standing next to a trash pile of oyster shell from one of these camps and imagine the circumstances the soldiers faced. Anyway, I was able to recover more artifacts from the Civil War and before.
