I was detecting an area very near a Civil War fort and found a brass fork with "U.S." stamped on the top side. Is this a Civil War era fork? Of note, the place that I was searching has served as a mini-dump for years......the year range of garbage goes right up to 2004!

Sorry but no digital camera yet........

Does the fork have 3 tines or 4?If 3 then the answer to your question would be yes.

It's a four pronger and the same size as a modern table fork. It has an oval "opening" or hole at the top, looks like it was designed to hang. The style of the "U.S." that's stamped into is very much like the way I've seen "U.S." on other period items......could be WWI?

Thanks for your reply. I'll continue to research it.
