Got to hunt in Washington TN today. Hunted a high ridge where the Tennessee Acadamy(circa 1812) was supposed to have been. Found these drops. They kind of look like Colt Revolving rifle but too many rings I think. Was told Sherman incamped in the area. Some of them mic to .55 but sure they are 54's with oxidation. What are they?:icon_scratch:

Looks like a Merrill Carbine. Devonrex

Found harmonica reed, a couple of iron rings, but no buttons or coins. Was told a camp was at the bottom of the ridge and checked for it last week but this must be it. Lots of brick in the ground. Was a tomato field last year but not planted this year. I was actually trying to verify that the old Tennessee Academy was there but will take CW finds anyday.

Also found what appears to a rear sight assembly, but pretty sure it is from a more modern rifle.

Definitely Merrills. Just a word of advice. Your desciption gives alot of detail about where you found these relics. There are many sharks swimming on this forum, and others like it, just waiting to steal your detecting sites. It has happened to many people here. So, good luck with the site. I hope you make some really great finds.

Appreciated flintchip.

Looks like gun blew on the sight assembly....didn't find any eyes or ears though....ha ha

Think it is 30 cal carbine.....bet that hurt !!!! No markings apparent ...will recheck.
