OK NOW TO DO THE HISTORY FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM --
Lorenz Krauss -- enlisted in the NY 15 reg. company I heavy artillery at NYC on August 24th , 1863 as a Pvt. for a term of 3 years ...he was taken as a POW on may 1st , 1864 at the battle of the wilderness. (Orange, Virginia ) . he was later on paroled -- and was finally discharged in Washington D.C from the General hospital July 14th , 1865
might have been made earlier say 1861 /1862 and crafted in 1863 when he enlisted -- by then 3rd year of the war soldiers knew that having a body ID tag was important --to sort the dead from the "missing in action POW's" after battles --for the reports that were back to inform the family that you were "dead" -- if the tag showed up on a body you were dead --if not you were thought of as POW or MIA and could be for a long time hold up your families death benefit payment
Different people have different opinions about this and that is a decision only you can make. As personal as this find is, and if it were mine, I wouldn't do anything to it. It tells it's story just like it is. But that is your call. Congratulations again on a great findShould I seek restoration or what are your suggestions? Or referals....
many wrote their name on a piece of paper and pinned it to their shirt...Union troops at Fredericksburg were reported doing it mid afternoon as Burnside poured one regiment after another at the Heights.might have been made earlier say 1861 /1862 and crafted in 1863 when he enlisted -- by then 3rd year of the war soldiers knew that having a body ID tag was important --to sort the dead from the "missing in action POW's" after battles --for the reports that were back to inform the family that you were "dead" -- if the tag showed up on a body you were dead --if not you were thought of as POW or MIA and could be for a long time hold up your families death benefit payment
