My husband dug this Civil War? relic yesterday. This looks just like a Civil War era military uniform cuff button that he dug two years ago, but there is no shank on the back and it is much larger. It is almost an inch in diameter and it has a stripe on the back where the metal is a slightly different shade than the rest. The back is flat and smooth and the front is slightly domed. There are 4 small metal tabs around the edge. There is no lettering at all. Can anyone help?

I think it may be a post CW button but it appears to be one that has fallen apart. There are a lot of experts on here that will chime in.

Welcome to Tnet.
What your husband found was part of a belt like chain made of button faces. I'm not sure of the puropse of them. They might have been salesmans display or something like that I'm not sure. The type of eagle on that was used from the 1850's to 1875. All of the belts I've seen are 1870's or later. So I would say your's dates somewhere around the early to mid 1870's. I'm not sure what it is worth.

I looked for pics and couldn't find any. There are some on ebay from time to time. If I find any I'll let you know.

Does anyone happen to have a picture of the complete belt?

I think I remember PBK saying they were decorative worn by patriot women.

b0sslady you are more than welcome for my bit of help.
Cru. PBK could be right. I've seen them and dug some pieces but never really knew what they were for.
