Cool! Sometimes these were blasted out after the explosion. Maybe it came from an exploded shell.

That was a fun hunt! It should have an anchor symbol after the ORD. Hopefully a nice war date for you. i bet that one was fired from a federal gunboat!

Great find, there should be a date on it. A great source on bullets, artillery, fuses, etc. is " Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery" (ISBN 0-942365-08-9). There are 58 fuse photos with descriptions. Yours looks to be a "USA Naval water tight paper time fuse"...photo of the top view looks like Williedigit's photo. Again congrats!

No disrespect to my brother VMI Digger, but before you go the brush route, let it dry out VERY thoroughly and take a wooden toothpick to it. You might can "flake off" some of the extra-dry corrosion and find nice smooth brass beneath - like toothpicking a button. It has to be BONE dry for this to work. If that doesn't work, I'd try a little naval jelly, and resort to the brush if all else fails (VMI pointed out BRASS brush and I agree). But in all honesty, if the first two methods don't work, it's unlikely you have enough metal there to see a date. We don't see naval shells in my neck of the woods, so SUPER fuse. I'm going to PM you before I head your way the first week in August . . .

I thought more people would see it are we not suppose to put it in different places? it was a todays find and it is a military relic and I found it with my deus so thats why I put it in those places.

You can also post it in the civil war forum and the forum for your state

Good thing that you had a friend that was able to ID that fuse. I probably would have chucked it with the rest of my trash! Great find, and thanks for sharing!
