All Treasure Hunting
Ok, so I have been reading a few websites and posts here about rules/regs on hunting the SF area. If I understand what I am reading, it is a no-go to hunt any SF beaches that are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. What about other beaches that may be in the area? I am planning a 4 day or so trip out there and wanted to try my luck at some beaches since I have no beaches anywhere near where I live.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I might go in the area? I did read there might be some beaches north or south of the GGNRA that may be OK. Are they over hunted and how far away are they? I also read something about a place called the Golden Gate Park, where is that and is it ok to hunt? Also I will be relying on public transportation if that makes a difference, it is not worth me renting a car for those few days.

I have never been to SF but we are staying somewhere near the wharf if that helps.

Thanks for any input.

Robaz, Yes: The only beaches that off-limits there, are the federal GGNRA ones. All the others (state, city, county) are ok. You can get a color coded map to show exact boundaries. But with that said, some people have un-knowingly (newbies who didn't know any better) detect them, and .... went un-bothered. But the technical answer though, is as you say.

Do not confuse Golden Gate Park with that though. Despite the similar sounding names, the park is city property, not federal. And there is no prohibitions on md'ing in city parks. HOWEVER, like all turf hunting, you ... uh ... need to use a little discretion. I mean, just because maybe there's nothing in city code addressing/forbidding it, doesn't mean that someone still couldn't gripe (detecting has connotations afterall). So we tend to pick low traffic times, workers who might gripe, etc.... Ie.: keep it simple, don't waltz over beach blankets and through ball games, etc...

Golden Gate park has been worked to a frazzle. The panhandle is real junky, if you care to try to see through and around tabs, zinc, etc.... The Childrens playground/hippy hill area is very junky and clad ridden. The Big Rec. area is much cleaner, but has been worked to a frazzle. If you're someone who likes to angle for 11"+ silver there's still whispers there :)

Or you can wander the trails into various other meadows and randomly find some oldies. The place is giant, so .... no one gets it all :)

Tom, thanks for the excellent help. I want to try my hand and some evening beach hunting when people are mostly gone. What beach do you think would be worth a try that is not GGNRA and is not to far since I will not be renting a car.

Robaz, I'm ~1.5 hrs. south of there. So can't say for sure what beach is good. But, heck, nor could I say for MY area of CA "what's good". Because I'm strictly a beach-storm-erosion hunter. I detest dry sand hunting. And for wet sand erosion, condition change with each storm, tide, etc.....

But suffice it to say, we're not in an erosive time of year right now. So you're going to be relegated to the dry sand. And as to which you can and can't hunt (fed versus any other entity), just do some internet google searches on the domain of the GGNRA. Whatever beaches fall within the color coded map boundaries of them, (probably just on google maps, color codes) is their domain. All else would be some other entity. Personally, I would not hesitate to hunt any beach up there (I highly doubt anyone cares). But .... since you're asking, google (maps) is your friend.
