Coal mine with Fossis

Today Fossis and I went out to his favorite fossil collecting spot, which is disappearing fast due to reclamation. We did pretty good today, at least the rain held off until we got done.
With all of the recent rains, it washed a lot of the mud away, making for easier finds.

One of our first good finds, was an incredible rock. We chipped away at the face of it, and underneath was a huge fossil wood cast, and a large fern grouping. Sadly we could only take a picture, as it was too unstable to collect.

Then we posed for a pic there to show the area, and took a pic of some of the finds in the back of his truck. (Hammer there for scale)

Then we did a little metal detecting, and found 4 pennies and a dime (clad), and a little pendant that looks Catholic. Then it was getting late, we were getting hot, and it was starting to rain. A great day out, and those of you interested in going there with Fossis better set something up before it is all reclaimed!!!

All that stuff in the truck, neat-o. Fossils are so fascinating. Each one is unique and never before seen by any human - so cool.

Those fern fossils are absolutely incredible! What a piece of art.

I guess when you find an outstanding specimen of that size, it's like "good news / bad news"

Scotto made the remark, (We are the first human's to
ever see these fossils), as far as retreiving this one, it was
fractured in hundreds of places, but I have saved many solid
pieces of the same type.

Incredible post !! I have found few fossils in my life and would feel as though I had found gold to see these in person What a shame nothing could be salvaged > priceless arts of nature just lying there

Thanks Carolina, even though we couldn't get many
of these, (I'me not going to chip it apart until later), I want
to show it to Irbadajoe, he is coming up from Texas to
hunt with me, then we can retrieve some small ferns.

But over the years I have collected wood the size of
truck & car tires, down to the size of my little finger, &
ferns by the thousands.
I have a very large collection, & sold & traded for many
rocks & Minerals.
These fossil trees are so common in this area, (many
miners took them home), that they are in lot's of flower
beds, I wait until they get tired of them, then try to buy
them, I have even bought some at yard sales.
