I found this thin penny-sized coin button today just a couple of inches deep in a plowed garden. It has white thread in the shank. You can see it in the middle of the bent shank and also to the side. I have never found a coin button with thread before. Is it possible for thread to survive on a button that has been buried for 150 years? Or must it have been lost more recently?

It's a flat button closer to 200 years :icon_thumright:

Yeap, it is possible. Your is early 1800s, I've found some from the late 1700s on buttons.

Possibly hemp thread as it resists rotting.

A few years ago I stumbled upon an 1830's lumber camp. I found lots of plain flat buttons ripped from clothing likely due to the strenuous work. Many of them still had thread attached.
