🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Coin, button, or junk?

Need some help with this one. Dug recently at a new spot, have only spent 30-45 min detecting there. Found 1 medium flat button, along with this item. Site is in central/eastern Va, with nearby sites and churches dating to early 1700s. When first dug it was pretty corroded, and with the hole, I guessed washer. After getting home and seeing that black/green patina peek out, I’m doubting washer. Whatever it is/was has seen better days. I think I can make out a star on one side (and possibly some letters) and then a hairline or wing on the other side. What says you……old/colonial copper, button, or trash (or something else)? Whatever it is has been in the ground for quite a while.

Looks like a button to me, but I'm no expert. Looks to have been a bit convex on one side (not flat like a coin). It definitely does not look like a washer.

I'm probably wrong but it looks very much like a "brake hold down spring cup/washer", this goes on the end of the hold down pin then twists to lock onto the hold down pin that goes through the brake shoe and compressing the spring against the shoe to hold it against the backer plate.

Otherwise I'd say it's the back of a two piece button.

IMO I think it's a button, the piece in middle is gone which it was two small holes now one large one

Looks like decorative part to where you would put a small key for maybe a small trunk/suitcase

I'd go with a button theme as well.

I have dug a few over the years that where the shank was, there's just a hole.

Being in Ontario it was probably the last thing I would think to recover.
Now 9.5 yrs later every good signal at that site I hope it's another in better shape.

Agreed….ive been on this site for a total of 20-30 min. Just trying to determine what’s there or if its worth a return trip (I’m saying yes).
