Coin Pendant?

Found this in my front yard today (House dates back to early 1800's)
It's been through quite a bit, whatever it is. It's not attracted to a magnet, but it does have a hole that goes right through. Thought it might be a coin turned into a pendant of some sort. any ideas? There isn't any lettering or other markings evident. How could I best determine what kind of metal it is?
