Cold Day

I managed to get out for a couple of hours detecting today, but the ambient temp was minus 1c /30.2f, so with windchill it was about minus 7c / 19f. When my fingers stopped working I decided to go and take some photo's instead .

Not a lot, a few coins, a gold plated wedding band, livery button and so on. I am going back with my shooters mitts next time . I did a post about it in "Todays Finds"

What you need Ian is a pair of seal skinze gloves...brilliant for detecting, wool on the outside with a neoprene membrane, doesn't matter if the out-side gets wet, your hands are always toast ...nice pictures

I'm starting to think you Brits are such sissies. When it is 30F here, it's t-shirt weather. You have to catch your breath a little when it hits 30 belowF. Of course, detecting gets pretty much out of the question, as the frost line is 48 inches. You can detect the snow in the parking lots, though. But now in your defense, this is an extremely low humidity climate here, and cold just doesn't feel that cold. 5F below zero is more comfortable here than a wind chill of 10F in Oklahoma, which has higher humidity. See if you can find some of those 'Hot Hands' and stick a couple in your gloves. They really help. (You can put them in your boots, too)

LOL, I thought that when I gave up today , but seriously it was my fault for not wearing gloves. You are right, it's the wet combined with the cold that does it, I have ordered a pair of sealskinz so I should be ok in future. Tomorrow I will wear a pair of fingerless gym gloves I think, less bulky than my shooters mitts and I will remember my hot hands too .

You guys do be careful out there. Frostbite is not pretty, and I don't know how I've avoided it all these years. Learn to recognize the signs of hypothermia, as that can kill you real quick.
