I found this brass (bronze?) square at a great colonial spot I've been searching recently. Most finds are 1780's to 1800 and nothing past 1820. There have been some spectacular relics, but this one has me stumped.

The sunburst on one side is very distinct while the wreath on the back is more delicate and hard to see in spots, but it does form a full circle. It's a thick piece and obviously some time went into engraving it. What do you guys think? Game piece, coin weight, or something else?

A stamp plate ?

A stamp plate ?

That's a thought, it does remind me a bit of the "Miss Elizabeth Beach" stamp plate I found some time back. No trace of lettering though and I didn't think pictograms like that were common in correspondence back then.

Yeap Coin Weight. Looks late 18th C....

Awesome! Do the markings have any significance in terms of measurements or are they just decoration?

They do mean something, but not seen that type in my books.
