I am no expert on buttons, so I need some help with this one. It was found at the Pipsico Hunt this past weekend. It was found close to the archaeological dig site there. Any ideas of the age?

Thanks ahead of time!
J

Looks as if it might be a plain-face button, originally gilt, dating from the very late 18th or early 19th century. Any backmark?

Unfortunately I didnt get to keep it. It had a plain front and I couldn't see a backmark on it, though I never got a chance to clean it. Hopefully if the other members clean the finds and post them, we will be able to make something out.

Though now that you mention it, there was another concave button found, smaller than mine, with the word gilt on the reverse rim, found in the same general area.

Does that help?

Well, it would seem to support the idea that this one is also a late 18th or early 19th century gilt.

Kiros, yes, the one I found had the writing on the back....I could only make out the "G"...but VHSkip was able to spell some words out and then Sentinel came and said it was a gilt button.

Rowdy found two of them as well, one looks like it may have been from a cuff. All these were found in the right of the dig area. I hope they will be able to tell us for sure, when Ranger Dan turns all this stuff over to Mary and her buddies at William and Mary College!
