Those early pewters are huge, before the early 1800s, forks were not commonly used, spoons & knives were the norm, The spoons were necessary for for stews & hot liquids, you could eat everything else with your fingers.
Here's a quote I found in the 'History of Forks'
'The English ridiculed forks as being effeminate and unnecessary. "Why should a person need a fork when God had given him hands?" they asked.'
