well upon request from a few good people i decided to post a colonial copper coin spill i found two saturdays ago . this was found at a cellar site that been detected many time by others and was my second time there .

anyway after a several hours at another spot my buddy and i decided to hit one more site before calling it quits for the day . i hinted at this place as it had alot of area and we were only there one other time and it was very close by.

it was a big center chimney colonial and we found a few buttons last time , well we split up and i was detecting basically alone for about an hour and a half. i started working an area slowly when i got a great high coin sounding target at around 6 inches i was really thinking a nice silver piece and out popped this

i was very excited to see these , but by their dark color i just knew there was morein the hole

three more coppers proved me right , wow now i was really floored .
unable to see what they were because of the thick corrosion but they were large coins and i just assumed they were matron head type large cents. later i found out i was wrong and learned that they were a King George III copper , a New Jersey copper and 4 fugio pennies . a real colonial coin spill and my largest multiple coppers in one hole .

heres what they looked like when they got home

the next job was trying to i.d. the varieties and then tackling the job of cleaning them. well after almost two weeks they are nearly there .

heres a some pictures of them individually

if any one can tell the varieties as i'm a little confused on two of the fugios it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks all for the nice comments on the other forums .

Yeah I don't think 9-P because the R reaches over the bottom E on the coin we're trying to ID. Starting to doubt it's a 9 obverse.

Well I've reached a dead end. I can't find an obverse that seems like a better match than the 9, but I can't sell myself on any of the 4 reverse options. If I was guessing based on it being a 9 I'd say the P is the closest.

Well here's my final thought. The ID coin and 9-P reverse seem to have something else in common I'm not seeing on any others, and that's a very small space between the ARE and ONE. So really my only problem is the R not seeming to be a match, but the more I look at it, it seems unnatural, at least to how most of the Rs are made. So I think the coin is a 9-P and the R is just being a little distorted because of the condition. I really don't see anything else that makes sense and am looking forward to hearing the ID from someone who can say for sure. I have nowhere else to go but to say 9-P final answer. ;D

again much thanks to Patch , Don , Hogge and others for the help and nice remarks , comments and banner nominations . this kind of find (colonial coinspill) has been on my " list to find" for some years now .

the more i look at it Patch the more i agree with your final assessment , also "to the powers that be" i posted a couple of non-photobucket type pictures on the first post is that o.k. to be accepted onto the banner now ???

Would have thought this would have gone straight up :help: :help: :help: :help:

Again great find...since people are speculating if it was a pocket spill or cache. I'm going with a lost coin pouch. Maybe dropped will riding a horse. How is that for specific?

As far as banner find...I too feel it is banner worthy but here are the requirements for making the banner.

We often get asked about the criteria we use when selecting posts that appear in the TreasureNet masthead banner.... While we don't have any firm criteria, we follow these general guidelines...

•Finds must be significant, and plausible.
•Finds / posts must be RECENT.
•Images must be hosted on the TreasureNet server.
•Posts with great stories are more likely to be selected.
•If the post is one of the members first posts, it is less likely to be selected.
•Finds must look good in the banner.

I think the third bullet point is knocking this one out. I don't think the pictures are being hosted on the TreasureNet Server.

It is still a banner find to me...congrats.

Ok, back to just ignoring all the banner stuff.

Best policy

I'm a creature of habit so I never post my pictures on TreasureNet...I guess no banner for me.

there either because I used photobucket :-[
Using Tnet to post is a pain....

using tnet is tough when you try to post photos in a certain order within a story text ( using the regular way all the photos are just at the bottom of the page) , you can very easily do it with photobucket is all. i did go back and post a couple of tnet hosted photos on the first post but i guess thats not good enough :dontknow:

awesome finds!! forgive me if you've already gone over it (i don't think you have) but could you tell us your cleaning process for these coins? you did a remarkable job!

I happen to like Colonial coppers.

An amazing find Leddel, but even more amazing to find multiple rarities in a single hole :o Banner nomination sent

Nice wow! Always been a dream of mine to even dig a colonial coin much less a pocket spill!!! :notworthy:

Can you tell me how you got those so clean after you found them corroded? I know this post is old, but I have a couple old colonial coins that I found that I can't see much of...

Thanks.

Leddle you sure no how to make a fellow cry by looking at those finds , damn they are pristine and represent a past long ago helluva find ,you got my thumbs, vanzutphen

Fan friggin tastic!

I voted banner, Dan. The magnitude of that many coppers in one hole is astonishing. Congratulations, and I think you deserve the happy dance.

This is an old post....but if there ever was a T Net Banner injustice, it was this post.
