Went to a spot ive been finding shoe buckles, flat buttons, and old copper coins. Got a good tone, dug it , and seen this in the hole! I hope its real! I have been digging this spot for about 8 months on and off. No silver and no jewelry until now! It looks about 4or 5 carat . I still cant beleive it... 20161124_123047.webp20161124_095146.webp

I hunt a lot of colonial sites myself, and have never come across a piece like this. Can't offer any help, but would love to hear more about it as you research. Would also like to see some more close ups after a good cleaning, especially any maker marks you might find. Congrats on a nice find!

Looks like glass or paste stone, not sure of the date yet....

Do you know what kind of metal it is? Gold or Brass? Can't see in the picture too well. Bet it looks great cleaned up though!

I know that rubies are "corundum" stones like sapphires and rate a 9 on the Moh's Hardness Scale, diamonds are a 10. A real ruby would be hard to scratch, but not impossible. If you have a diamond tester or can take it to a jeweler or pawn shop, they could tell you for sure. Hope it's real, and if not then I hope it's real old, or both!

Good luck!

Still a nice find, but my guess is Plated and more then likely glass. A real ruby that size would be worth 30g.. But have it looked at just to be safe.. Great hunting spot..

Can't help identify the time period, but I'll bet your heart skipped a beat when you first saw it! Congratulations!

I almost forgot the shoe buckle piece i found also...lol. i just found what i guess is the makers mark. Its an arrow with a U in the middle. Still cool reguardless of what it is!1480016366389-249059591.webp1480016714720-2118359866.webp

Love the ring. Was it one of those deep iffy signals?

Off the top of my head, I believe the U with an arrow is for Uncas, which made many pieces of costume jewelry around the 1950s. Doesn't seem too old, unfortunately.

Uncas, 1940's
Cool find, always very exciting, congrats

see the corrosion around the edges gold doesnt do that.its plated and more than likely glass, sorry

ring is definitely costume. You will never see a real ruby all scratched up like that nor one that size set in brass. Ruby and sapphire are corundum with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale where diamond is 10. It takes a 9 or higher to scratch a ruby and there isn't that much in the world that will scratch one. Possibly garnet which scratches pretty easily as does glass.

everyone is prob telling you the same thing. ruby will not get scratched like yours is and the corrosion, gold does not do that. it is still a cool find, nonetheless. congrats!

Ruby is a type of corundum. The only harder known item than it is diamond. It will not scratch. I think early 20th century. it's a pretty ring.

Very nice find. I'm not versed in dating rings, but my guess is cut glass. It could very well be colonial or early 19th century. Great find!

Regardless it looks like a good find and something worth doin some research on good job!!!

Anything I recover from a site that gives up some relics will have me thinking it could be old. Too bad the ring isnt. Rings are always cool to find. This post was pretty educational.
Congrats on your finds.

It's age has already been noted by me and treblehunter. No need to keep with the "it's possibly colonial. Keep up the research". haha.
