Hello All,

I didn't know that those early settlers here in KY had internet until today...

HB and I got out on some new land yesterday, trying to find an old site or two that we were after. It was muddy and cold (low 30s), and we got an early start. By mid-afternoon, we had crossed the creek four or five times, been attacked by the briars in the woods, and had little to show for it except two flat buttons.

I knew that we only had one good hour left to hunt, but we'd pretty much run out of ideas (and were very tired). We got back in the truck to drive out of the property, and as we left, I looked behind me and said "Let's check out one more spot--on that hill above the creek." HB turned us around and we walked out again through the cornfield.

As we got close, we saw some interesting geography--what looked like filled-in holes in the edge of the field. We made a quick turn up into the cornfield, and I got the best signal I'd had all day. HB swiped over and said "It's either silver or a Large Cent." I was hoping it wasn't a chunk of tricky iron.

I dug and could see a round edge sticking out of a clod!

Large Cent!!! :headbang:

That got us fired up--and we forgot about how tired we were. ;D The site turned out to be very thin--perhaps a narrow time span of habitation, which meant that it wasn't the site we were looking for. There were only a few little iron blips, and some buttons and such. It felt like we were hunting a PA site, instead of the 150 year old iron infested scrapyards we usually haunt. :D HB bagged a couple of pewter buttons, a large "dandy button," and some other bits--one of which is quite interesting. He also got a piece of circuitboard with a brass top. Those early settlers had a radio. :D I put the circuitboard in my finds photo below. I'd like to be able to ID it, just out of curiosity, before I throw it away. :P

Here are HB's finds. The little brass piece at the top is odd. It is square on the bottom like a square nail. The hole in the item does not go all the way through the knob on the top. I estimate it to be about 3/4 of an inch long. Any help with this item is appreciated.

And one more peek at my LC. It turned out to be an 1831. I have already dug an 1831 before, but this one is in much better shape.

Way to go guys. You never let us down.
Congrats on that LC BB. :hello2:
As far as the circuit board, it looks like early Pong to me. ;D

I enjoyed Pong. ;D

Would you be so kind to post it in the "What is it?" section? I'll add the photos of this one to your post.

That circuit board looks like an old colonial motherboard for a force field modulator. They had to keep the hostile indians out of their camps somehow. :icon_profileleft: :icon_profileright: :tongue3: Nice Coronet by the way. You had a great year for Largies Buck. :headbang:
Chris

LOL in this area, they needed a force field to keep the hostile indians away. :o

I am pleased with the Coronet. It's one step closer to my goal of 20 for the year. This year has been lighter on the good relics (only one belt plate this year), but heavy on the coppers. When it comes right down to it, I'm happy either way.

I hope you guys get to hunt again in 2009.

Best Wishes,

Buck

Very Nice Finds,
I think it is very cool that back in the early 1800's they knew you two would come in Respect and preserve the remains of there little settlement. They knew with many changes over the years that it might be hard to find there little homestead, So with hope they built a little simple device, now called a "Beckon Call" to help with the search and remarkably you heard that faint signal and turned around to save the day.
on another thought. would the little brass piece be from a bail style Drawer pull ?

yo BB

From the land of the Bluenose.....great looking coin for being in the earth so long! Imagine that rang up sweet. As for the circut board.......................could be alien technology...lol!

I still can't beleive we spent 4 hours looking for housesites on 300 acres with really no success.
We then get in the truck all loaded up and leaving, about to pull on the Hwy and we decide to turn around and go look for one more site. Walk the 200-300 yards to where we think it was and turn on the machines, not 10 feet into the corn crop BBoy digs the first target. LC baby.
I'm thinking he will reach his goal of 20 LC for the year before long.
It was a great day hunting hunting with you BB, look forward to the next time we can get out.
We need to go back and find those other sites. We know they are there.
What are the odds of the colonial weather balloon falling on our old homesite?
I'm really curious to what that thing is.

How deep was the circuit board thing? It could be an electronic yardage marker, property stake. Some took batteries and were in an elongated tube straight down in the ground. This way all you had to do was turn on a machine and it would locate it in the ground, no more digging for property lines..... jgas

I'd guess based on the board and the components hat you circuit board would be from the 70s or 80s. As for what it is for, could be about anything. But the cone seems to implie to me that it was a head of a rocket. I would guess maybe it was a remote controlled rocket or something.

Just my WAG!

Great other finds by the way.

It was 3 inches or so, doubtful it was a property line marker but possible I guess.
I'm betting it is phone related.

Congrats on finding the LC! I would love to find one of them. The circuit board looks to be a device used as a fuse, probably for fireworks. There is no tuned circuitry or logic type circuitry. Looks like a delay fuse for something, probably fireworks. Although you would think it would have been blown to pieces.

Nice find on the Large Cent. :icon_thumleft: Think I'll also go with alien technology on the circuit board. :D

Fighting the prickers? Yeah, Dan and I did that this weekend. Guess it's the price you have to pay.

The LC looks good.

The circuitboard is funny. It does look like vintage 70's. In the early 80's I use to desolder the transitors, resistors and capacitors from the likes of those.

Bob

i think the brass what is it is part of the valve assembly from an old kerosene heater
as for the circut board it looks to be a part of transmiter used in model rockets back in the mid 80's very low power there should be one more board that would of held the battery (9v) and a short wire antenna
