A friend of mine dropped this by today and asked me if I knew what it was. :dontknow: Not being up on old pistols I told him to leave it and I would see what I could find out.

He found this gun about 50 years ago around a old cotton gin in Russelville, Alabama. He said it was wrapped up in some cloth and he pulled the cloth and it came out of the dirt.

From what I can tell it is a 1851 Colt Navy. I'm curious about the markings on the cylinder. Can anyone help me here? Any thoughts ?? On top of the barrel is says A????? Saml Colt New York City

Thanks for looking,

EdistoDigger

Re: Colt 1851 Navy?

Nice find. Can we see a pic of the whole pistol and what does it say on the barrel?

I think it says US PATENT. That's what I'm seeing right now.

Thanks,

Your looking at the cylinder. What does it say on the barrel (on top)

I think you got the real deal. Someone will be along shortly to help. You can research the serial numbers from Colt. I'lllook for the link.

Thanks for the pics but you need better lighting or take the pics tommorrow in daylight. Too much shadows. Also a use a darker background will help the camera balance better.

I believe it is a model 1849 pocket revolver. Serial number indicates 1854 production.

The top likely reads "COLTS PATENT" from what I find online.

I think its a depiction of a stagecoach hold-up. Very cool. http://www.hackman-adams.com/guns/colt1849.htm

The first Colt revolver to be made in large numbers was the Model 1849 in 31 caliber. Around 325,000 were marked as made in New York or Hartford between 1850 and 1873, and another 11,000 marked as made in London, England. More of this model were made then any other Colt revolver in the 19th century. It had a five or six shot cylinder with barrels in lengths of 3", 4", 5" and 6". Some of these pocket models had cylinders engraved with a scene of a stagecoach holdup.

You may be able to see the stagecoach hold-up engraving better here.
