seems that in todays "socialist" training mind set -- folks are being taught they "owe" the state ---"free labor"--some colleges are going as far as making "volunterring" to work for nothing for so many hours at their "approved" list of places --a "requirement" to graduate * "compulsory volunteerism" its being called --a total oxymoron if there ever was one. -- since one can not be "forced to volunteer".

no one has to be a part of the girls scouts to graduate grade school * --thats my point -- they choose to be a part of it --its not shoved down their throat by force. ( withholding something that you've "rightfully" otherwized earned to "force" you into working for free -- for groups that the college "approves" of )

there are many groups that you can "freely" join of your own accord if one wants to "vollunteer" one's time and energy and effort on a "unpaid for basis" girl scouts , boy scouts , you name it --and often they do good work --but to be "forced" to work for any "group" that you didn't join of your own free will and thus can leave--- without being paid for it is a differant matter . --the school can still withhold your degree * even after you've met all the normal educational "requirements " other than putting in the "free labor" hours at the "appoved" places of their choice, and in my veiw thats just dead wrong

so they can not go to colleges that are funded via thier own "public" tax dollars --so they can pay for it but not go to it.? --due to not wanting to be subjected to being "free labor slaves " at the places that the board of trustees "approve" of as being worthy -- thats so wrong in many ways

first it wrong to "force" folks into "vollunteering" at all (forced unpaid labor-- big legal no - no)--then its wrong to say that once you have been forced to "vollenteer" that you can not do "your hours" at the place / places of "your choice" -- say a local faith based group that feeds the homeless-- rather than at places "deemed" worthy by the college instead (thus the college board in fact decides who benefits from being able to tap into this free labor manpower pool )

"compulsory volunteerism" has always been a tradition of capitalism.Just think of all those unpaid overtime hours you worked to "get ahead".
It has always been a tradition in the armed forces.
Also more of it should be enforced to help maintain parity with the Chinese workforce.

Introducing this in college is the ideal place because once in the workforce it will be expected of you.

College is the biggest bunch of horse crap that was ever invented.
Remember the gulf of Tonkin incident that got us knee deep in viet nam? A lie invented by the CIA and Military brass - all college educated. Thanks a lot guys. Atomic weapons - all invented by the college elite. Hey lets design a bomb so big it can distroy an entire city - Oh don't worry about pushing the world closer the edge lets see how big we can make em and lets expose untold numbers to radiation just to see what it does. Way to go to use all your education to better the world. I have zero respect for any one with any sort of degree. I say this a lot to the so called educated...Never confuse being educated with being smart.

This is it?? This is in defense of Fascism. That's what it is you know. Getting your way with the fist, exactly what facst means in Latin, with a fist. You know, when you go into the military the first thing you give up is some of your rights. That's why "being volunteered" for KP is acceptable. I suppose it is inferred here that you should just give up your rights when you go to College. Volunteering is a great thing. Forcing it is just like forcing charity. It makes Volunteering and Charity USELESS, HOLLOW, and MEANINGLESS words. If they are forced then the definitions of those two words are not even met in the least. It sure is easy if you have to "volunteer" habitat for humanity or to go protect smelts from those "vicious" farmers who want water, but what if it was something you did not agree with. Lets say you had a leftist sementality and had to go do volunteer work for the John Birch Society or the NRA or you could not receive your degree in English lit? Wrong is wrong y'all. Possibly the sacrifice of years of my life to defend the Constitution made me very protective of the rights that it provides. A lot of posters here surely don't seem to care and are quite politicized about it. They only care when it is their rights being infringed, not someone elses.

Ah, old HKU! I'm still attending at age 52. Hard Knocks University.

As far as Volunteering . . . I thought one volunteered because they believed in a cause. Feeding the homeless, habitat for humanity, keeping the local highways clean, or some other cause for the betterment of the community.

Now, I do volunteer to work extra hours at work. I usually do it for something called "overtime pay". I volunteer in my community because i think the community is worth my time and effort. It is volunteering because I make the choice to do, or not do, what I see as a community need or benefit. If it isn't because you want to, it is called "conscription", not volunteerism.

Too many "collage" professors, not enough smart people. Too many sheeple.

The freedoms one gives up to perform military service in behalf of their community, country, and family really gives these brave men and women a better appreciation for true freedom than some of the rest of us. They really do volunteer, they vote by their decision to volunteer to risk their lives in behalf of others.

These same liberal jackasses who want "compulsory volunteerism" were the same ones who opposed it back in the 1960's. Only then, it was called "the draft". Most of those folks didn't call compulsory volunteerism a good thing back then. In fact, didn't a few of them flee the country to avoid it? Started a bunch of fires too with little bitty cards for that compulsory volunteerism.

uh its "been "enacted" by a college in new jersey (trenton)-- and no I'm not talking about work related stuff that can be part of your training for your feild of study --like "ride along" for police training or taking part in a dig as archie training -- I 'm speaking of having to do "community service" hours at whatever "approved" places the the "college" sees fit to send you to , doing whatever the "approved places" want you to do. -- "community service "like criminals are often ordered to do by judges as punishment for crimes. --things totally unrelated to your feild of study un anyway. --just free labor to be exploited.

there it is -- trenton college - new jersey --compulsory volunteerism -- now you go read it , learn a bit and then we can chat about it in a adult way -- by the way you never did answer my question ---what degree have you got and whats your gpa? which is a fair question to ask since you implied that my "rant" was degree envy based --which it is not --- my "issue" is that colleges should not be allowed to force students to do "compulsory volunteerism" hours or withhold their degrees ( work not related in any way to their degree's educational feild--- of course things like "ride alongs" for law enforcement training or working on a dig as a archie in training are related to their feild of education and are not the subject I speak of ) -- I mean things like picking up litter or non related "items" that are "community service" related items that crooks are often sentanced to do.

Ivan, I'm with you bud... and from the looks of things (an aweful lot of ignored posts), the typical bunch of strife-causing people have shown enough interest to argue with everything that's being said (except by themselves, of course :P )

None-the-less, there's no legal reason why anyone in a FREE nation like ours should be subjected to to mandatory volunteerism. And anyone who feels differently should just go volunteer themselves instead.
