So I dug this object out of a field in Southeast Virginia a few years ago and kind of forgot about it. Its solid copper for sure. The tooling marks make me think this thing was pressed kind of like a cookie cutter. The circle in the middle appears to have been perfect if it was straightened out. The area around the field have proven indian artifacts and colonial artifacts.

My first thought was that it is part of a lantern that holds the glass in place. But why 12 of those fingers. And all the fingers are not the same length. My other thought was that it could have been some ornate knob.

Any thoughts at all? I'm clueless......and it stays in my :icon_scratch: box.

Just a guess, but it could be a frill from an old lighting pole conductor that was on top of a barn or house.

With 12 "arms", it suggests to me that it might be part of a clock or sundial.

Being copper, I concur with old digger ... a broken off lightening rod decoration.

Wow!!! I thought I'd never figure it out. I must have went through 1,000's of pics and looking into different ideas. Thank you so much creskol and anyone else that gave it a shot.

With a slight misspelling by old digger I was off looking at glass insulators and other crazy stuff.:laughing7: You guys are awesome!!!

He was referring to where you spelled "lighting" instead of "lightning".
