. A solid copper gouge or adze? Could this be a copper culture artifact?

It is absolutely a Copper Culture relic. Excellent find! Would have been used in wood working. Top shelf recovery right there. Congratulations.

Here is a link to some good info and pics.

Thank you !
You are welcome Woods! I love finding copper relics. There are a few in my profile pic that I have found over the years. I do have a small adze.

I am aware of one spearpoint in copper that was found 5 miles from here. I thought I finally found my trade, belt or tomahawk axe blade . Put my magnet on it and had to shift gears on the ID ! A thrill for me never even dreamed of finding a copper large cent let alone that.

I was exactly in the same boat when I found my first one. Ive heard and read the stories. Those relics are real and are here where we live. No doubt about it. My first copper find made the banner a few years back. A 7.5 inch spear point. Huge congratulations on your amazing Adze. The oldest ancient item you can find in the US.

I’m in So Central IL and I’ve never seen a copper artifact this far south. I heard about a small copper celt found with a detector on a Hopewell site just south of me. I found a nice piece of native copper in the glacial till here but it hasn’t been worked.

There's always the possibility there Todd. I've found many pieces of float copper over the years. Only one I have may have been worked into a bear effigy, but it's probably just my peridolia. There was one day my buddy and I dug 13 pieces of float copper in a very small area. I have a theory that they were part of a cache and may have been used as currency back in their time.

WOW looks like probably a pretty rare find where you got it. Again congratulations. Hopefully you can find more.

This is the float I found on a gravel bar in the Sangamon River in Macon Co. IL. It was a drought year and it’s the only time I’ve ever seen this gravel bar emerge. Since it’s been in water it didn’t turn green.

Wow that thing is massive. My biggest is probably 1/3 that size. Haven't found any out the water but I may have yo try that. I'd love to find a fish hook or harpoon tip.
