Copper 'US' Whatsit & 1961 mint set discards

Hi All!
Was kinda surprised to see another US piece come out today,
Stamped copper with a hinge fitting.. PO box Door? looks like it was broken halfway down a second part :dontknow:
Lots of targets dug, most didn't make it into the house,
but I got a lot of heavy scrap brass & copper. ;D\
Note the 'White metal' spoon stuck in the iron clump :laughing9:
Another strange find is the 1961 mint set,
they left the cent and token, spent the rest :D
An old compact, mirror missing ::)
My first 'Govt' .45 casing,
2 more of these old drawer handles, I think I have 5 of this style now,
Green one was setting on the surface.
and to top it off, an old lead thing, plumbing part?
got a couple similar, different sizes, other sites.
Thanks for looking! HH to Everyone

Ahh, I see more clearly now, the US item is a po box cover, round hole to left had lock, missing bottom piece held glass. I like the style ;D
Nicer than the heavy brass 2 dial combo box I currently have.
(though they are nice oldies too)

Great finds today Herbie!

Love that spoon sticking out of the clump of black iron! :laughing7:
That other spoon you found has a great design to it.

Thanks Dave,
great to hear from you!
My only question is, What the heck were they eating?
must have set heavily in the stomach :laughing7:

Re: Copper 'US' Whatsit & 1961 mint set discards

the 1961 mint set was silver -dime quarter half * the nickle --well its 5 cents --why leave the cent? who knows --funny the brass items -- maybe a hobo camp (scrap items --stolen stuff?)

any markings on the spoons handle back side?

Hi Ivan,
I figure a kid raiding dads collection, coins were probably spent at face value.
I don't think this plastic was in the water more than 20 years, silver was about $6 an ounce I believe, the remaining cent also points to a 'Post penny candy era' incident.
Backmark of the 'Spoon in the stone' are an unreadable maker with A1 White Metal.
Boo hoo, been a while for sterling flatware finds :D
Best to you

Re: Copper 'US' Whatsit & 1961 mint set discards

the styling looks late 1800 / early 1900 era type --white metal is a blend of tin and other metals * (no silver) == A1 --refers to quality --as in this is the "top of the line (best quality)--for this manufactor"

lead trumpet might be a old razor handle (broken)
