I've been out metal detecting today, it's the Morning-After Monday, the day after the flea market comes and goes. I met a husband and wife that owned property across the street from First Monday's flea market. Listening to this Story was nearly worth finding so little today.....
Across the street from the flea market, there were two old homes that had been condemned by the city. The owners had them bulldozed....and are in hopes that the city will buy the empty lots. The city wants to make a wide transition path from the old flea market lots to a new and larger lot that have animal stalls built by the city to allow animals and fowl back at First Monday. I found the bladed lots this morning and the neighbor next door filled in the information.
As I was walking over the far bladed lot, the actual owners of the first lot drove up. I met them and asked if I could detect on their lot. The bad thing was that the first 3"-6" of topsoil had been hauled away with the building's debris.... The good thing sent my heart skipping a few beats as I listened to the owners....
The owner was the daughter of the original owner. Being across the street, her father sold metal and plastic barrels when First Mondays came around. In 2001, I bought two metal barrels from this fellow and used them for my dust collection system because they have airtight lids; each with a clamp-lock rim. Their story became intriguing.... The mid-60's-age daughter and her husband tried to tell the story at the same time....finally the husband won-out...... With a neighbor sitting on his porch and a city working clean up the flea market grounds, his voice quieted down and he began.
"If you find it, you can have at least 50% of anything you find....... My wife's father used to run a Laundromat and he kept all the quarters he could. Our daughter visited her granddad one weekend and he took her to a room where he had one of the barrels he sold setting in the corner. She said she saw a 55-gallon barrel filled to the top with nothing but QUARTERS!!!!!!"
His hands went out and up and he continued. "It cost just over $5,500 to bulldoze the old house and small building that sat back there in the corner. I told the dozer driver that if I saw any quarters falling out of his bucket blade, I was going to stop the work!!! We took the house, and the little out-building, apart room by room, but we never found that barrel or any coins....Not even any loose ones."
By this time, I was again needing a set of those jumper paddles!!! Both pointed to the neighbor sitting on his porch and said he knew how to get a hold of them if I found something. After they left, I looked and I looked. I changed programs, sensitive, and changed from 5" to 8" size coils, but the only coins I found were near the untouched property line and they were just two 1960's pennies.... I'm going back later in the week with my big 10" coil and changing to the All-Metal mode, just to see if I can find anything big or deep....
Stay tuned,
