I went out to my favorite colonial church field again today and came up with this interesting piece. I'm not sure what it is. Could it be some kind of hammered coin? It's got a green patina to it, so maybe copper? The penny is for size reference and to distinguish front and back. I can see that there is something printed on either side, but the level of detail is poor at best. Anyone have any suggestions for cleaning it up a bit to pull some detail from it to help ID it?

What do you think this is???? You help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Happy Hunting!

~Nate~

Yes indeed....As in that's a hammered copper coin? If so, any idea how old? And of course I'll be back.

Thanks Bill, but I don't think it's lead. Not heavy enough. Not nearly soft enough either.

Maybe...If I could only pull some more detail from it. Anyone have cleaning suggestions?

Pretty sure cleaning wouldn't help much on that one. I agree it looks early Spanish copper, I think :-\

Thanks...That's exciting that it could be as old as 1600's. Haven't broken into that century yet. Wish I could get a definite confirmation though. Still working on cleaning it up a tad.

Another option is a Jetton.

I assume the black stuff you're referring to is coming from the bottom picture? If so, that's the relief of the coin's imprint standing above the rest of the coin's surface. That's the visible detail still able to be seen at this point. If that's not what you're looking at can you be more specific?

Re: Could it be hammered copper?

Put a small amount of proxide in a cup & nuke it for about 2 mins. then toss the coin in the hot stuff..It should help.then post some new pics when it's wet

I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Re: Could it be hammered copper?

I tried the peroxide boiling technique you mentioned Relicdude and took pics afterward. Here are the results. Not sure it made much of a difference or not, but I swear in the bottom right corner I see "671". Could it be 1671? Got my blood pumpin seeing that. Can someone else confirm they see it or not so I can calm my nerves and sleep tonight. Haha....Thanks for looking!

Re: Could it be hammered copper?(New pics added)

I don't see a date -but think i do see a shield....Keep hitting the same area you found it & you may turn up some more /relics/coins in better shape.Could be even older than 1600s

Try and get a tooth brush & do the hot treatment again -Clean the area above the shield -should be a crown....

Re: Could it be hammered copper?(New pics added)

its beyond cleaning, the detail isn't hiding, it just isn't there.

There is a shield, if someone could ID what was in it, it would narrow it down but it's too far gone. For the most part I think it is likely 1650-1750ish but it going to take someone who has handled many of whatever it is to catch on.

DirtDigger, it is 671, I live in Great Bridge and that's my house #. I've been looking everywhere for that piece of copper. Seriously, I hope it is the real thing. I'd loose some sleep too.
