I went out to my favorite colonial church field again today and came up with this interesting piece. I'm not sure what it is. Could it be some kind of hammered coin? It's got a green patina to it, so maybe copper? The penny is for size reference and to distinguish front and back. I can see that there is something printed on either side, but the level of detail is poor at best. Anyone have any suggestions for cleaning it up a bit to pull some detail from it to help ID it?

What do you think this is???? You help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Happy Hunting!

~Nate~

DirtDigger, it is 671, I live in Great Bridge and that's my house #. I've been looking everywhere for that piece of copper. Seriously, I hope it is the real thing. I'd loose some sleep too.

What a coincidence. Who woulda thought I'd find your house number in Suffolk?? Where do you do your detecting at? Send me a PM if you wanna get out for a hunt some time.

Got a hit from a reliable source on another site who suggested it is probably a spanish maravedi. Which would fit the 1671 date I think I'm seeing. Could be...

That's the type of coin that was first hinted at on this thread, at first I somewhat agreed. However, to me there are many things that look wrong about it being this type of coin.

Ask HISPAN, because if it is from his nearby Country he will know.

I checked the maravedis out too, but like Crusader mentioned there's things about it that don't look right. I'll find the answer sooner or later.

Sorry for so late was in the field hunting ..... :D
It is a four Maravedis coin of King Philip IV to 1661, it is very unusual to America in the territory of a copper coin that could only be used in the Kingdom of Castile, (not even you could use elsewhere in the Spanish Empire, and I never found one of these .... could afford her 17th century , a glass of wine or a piece of bread, were manufactured at the mints of Segovia ,Trugillo, Toledo and Madrid, but his is a bit run down and I can not read the mintmark.
A large coin.

Thanks for the ID and explanation HISPAN. I was very surprised to see this come out of the ground. Not something you find every day here in the states. Thanks to all who helped out with this ID. You've made me a happy dectorist!

Good luck to you all!
