It has a gold shimmer to it

Could be . . . but, I doubt that it's wood. I see no growth rings, no knots or insect damage, no textural clues that would indicate it was ever a living thing. Perhaps it's a schist of some sort.

Here's some petrified wood from Florida which exhibits such clues:

Reminds me of Schist, a type of mineral.
 

It breaks apart really easily...is that normal for schist?
