It's brass for sure . it's best to leave the patina on your relics , buffing them to look like new is not desired by collectors.
with horse tack it's no big deal and even looks nice but if it were a Civil war buckle you would have done major damage to the value. good luck , now go dig some treasure..

Thank you for your feed back how do you know it is brass we are new at this only been at it for 2 years.... I guess we will stop cleaning our finds..

I know it's brass because if it were gold it would not have been green. and brass buckles are a very common find , I found 2 this week .

Brass, copper, bronze, will mostly turn dark after being in the ground a long time. Gold would probably come out shiny.
