Hello all,

Just dug this at the park this evening. I wasn't expecting a silver dollar, it was a jumpy mid 20s-30 signal on the Nox so when I reached into the hole at about 6 inches and pulled this coin out, I was a bit flummoxed. At first I was thinking a foreign coin or a token, but as I wiped it off, I saw the Morgan design. The coin is lead and was cast from a 1891 dollar. I don't see a mint mark.

I found it in Billings Montana, which is an old railroad/cowboy town. Best I can figure is some railroad worker or cowboy got fooled and once they realized it, they chucked the counterfeit. I'm sure other stories could be devised.

Has anyone else found any of these? I've seen some earlier counterfeits posted, but this seems kind of late for that sort of thing.

Thanks for looking,

You guys counterfeit Morgan's look great compared to the one I found. Mine had 7 holes drilled in it and was stamped "B A D" on both sides... a rusted mess. I posted it in a thread with other items 8 or 10 years back and didn't get much action. Photos have since had the Photobucket treatment... Might dig it out for a fresh look.

You could put some teeth marks on it then the story would be even more interesting lol Thats a really cool find, Seems like back then making a counterfit wouldnt be an easy job

Still a neat find!

A silver dollar is still on my list. I have found an Ike as well as a SBA, but to me they don't count. I want a silver one (or a counterfeit like the one you found would be good too).

What I love about this one is with the date it was right during the time of the "old west" with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, Billy the Kidd and all the other interesting characters of the era. Just to imagine all of that was going on probably when this was cast and maybe even by an outlaw or gang.

That is a great coin. To echo what others said that is a really neat find even if it is counterfeit. I would be really happy to find that!! Think of it as the next best thing to the real thing!

When I was in China a few years back I bought a Morgan dollar and some seated liberty dollars. I got what I thought was a good deal on them until I saw they were for sale everywhere. When I took a closer look I realized all were counterfeits. I’ll have to dig them out and post pictures. They look really good, but I noticed the plating was coming off of the Morgan and the seated have “In God We Trust” on them and that phrase was not added until much later.

Your contemporary counterfeit is really cool not like my modern ones. Keep swingin.

I was in the Philippines a couple of years ago and went to the Manila cathedral amongst other places. When we arrived some of the locals sell you some goods. I bought a fake Morgan and I think a trade dollar. I knew they were fake as soon as I bought them. I keep them for the memories of being out there.
