I just got in the door and so excited to post this that i didn't even rinse and check the dates of the coin spill. Ive been wanting a US silver for along time and now i have some. I see standing liberties and barbers in the mix.i will post more pictures and dates later when I'm done cataloging all of them. They are mostly all quarters with some dimes and five cent pieces mixed in. I thought i wouldn't top my 26 silver Newfoundland coin find a awhile back but i did. They all were in a small area on a old driveway and the ground was packed hard. Took me two hours to dig them all out. At a quick glance they look to all be from late 1800's to late 1920's. Thanks for looking! [emoji2]

I may need some standing liberty quarter experts. One was hard to read the date without cleaning and i was sure it was 1928. But i realize now its the raised version date of the coins which was earlier time frame i think?
If so is there anything i could put on the tarnish in the date spot to properly id it?

Lay it flat and put a drop on lemon juice on the date for a while, then a drop of soap and rub gently with your finger and see if some comes off. If yes, repeat if you need to clean it more. If no, just rinse it and you're done.

I went back and hit the spot hard and even the immediate area. No coins. I did find this piece of iron that looks like it could have been a lid or something a foot directly above the coin spill. Its was big enough to hold them all. I guess i should have put something beside it in the picture for scale. Any thoughts if it could have been a lid?

Congrats!! I found a 1900 barber dime and two 1910-11 Canadian dimes In a Wa. State logging camp...I noticed the Canadian dimes were not struck as deep as the U.S. dimes...cool you could read all the CA dimes.

I bet that's part of your lid. The coins spread out seem like a hard bunch of things to lose, but packed neatly inside a small tin it would be easy to lose I suppose.

I have looked at this thread quite a few times...drooling each time lol

Even though i hit the spot again with no luck I'm going to randomly stop in and try it every once in awhile because its really close to home. Next one may be after a long rain and try my luck. The ground was super dry so a lose silver may appear. Also after that i want to shovel it up some and scan the dirt piles just in case! [emoji2]

I gave the spot another try today and still no luck for any more coins. Im thinking the 73 must have been all of them. Im going to wait and if we get enough rain to soak all the way through the dry hard dirt ill give it one more try just to be sure. It is possible one of those tricky to find little five cent pieces could be hiding there on its edge or something! [emoji2]

The problem is many still use something abrasive and in that case there is no choice but to say cleaned. Maybe if everyone used the term "conserving" some might pause for a minute and think about what they are doing. Coins from the ground are certainly not problem free, but putting a million new scratches on them is most definitely cleaning.
