Finally the weather is right down here in S.W. Georgia and the creek is clear. I got invited to go creek bank hunting with a friend of mine. I came across these shards that were mostly under the root system of a tree. It appears all are from the same vessel. The pot looks like it would have had the diameter of a steering wheel. At least one of the smaller fragments does line up with the largest piece.

Thanks.. that's interesting.. I have one rim piece finished like that from down here.
Most are roller over and have a thicker "dubbled up" rim.
I will post a pic. When I get home if that's OK.
Man....that is a biggun.

Gator,
Please post your picture(s) It would have been a heck of a pot if it were whole. I think that there is more of it in the bank.

sweet find man congrats HH

Nice big pieces. Like that design motif.

Nice print on that and it is the largest single piece I have ever seen. Some of those pots when whole were like barrels. Must be a good village site close by. I went yaking today and found plenty of rocks, lol.

Is that a common design on pottery in your area? Looks cool, like an effigy pot. I hope you can pull a Jonzer!!

Of course, I'm going back to look for more of this pot but, I doubt that I will have his luck in finding the rest.

I only have one small piece of definite swiftcreek pottery from my area and its not a rim piece.
I do however have one rim style uncommon to my knowlage of the area..its the flaired out rim shown first.. then I will show a couple common rim styles from my area.
I've found that minus a pattern and without some distinguishable temper other than sand the rim finish is the next best way to get an Idea of the group who made it.

Looking at it now.. it's totally different.

Here are some of my local regular pieces. I found and glued together 4 pieces of this one.

There's also several colors here besides the normal Brown.

Sorry to post this, it is irrelevant to your find, but I can't help my self. Gator, the pieces you have put together look like part of a huge pot. I'm curious, what is the largest pot found? An old timer told me that he found a complete piece, the size of a wash tub. Do you guys think he's being truthful?

Yes I think he is being basically truthful ... cooking pots recovered here in Florida have been a few feet tall and almost as wide on top as a fifty gallon drum.
Those had round bottoms and would sit in the ground with coals built up around them.
I will post a bottom after work.

Is the pattern on this piece normal in your area?

I've seen other pieces found around here from time to time. The one I posted is the largest piece that I have found. I'll post some other shards with different patterns later.
