So I've had this thought, that since there are quite a few banks in my area and my girlfriend seems to be friendly with the majority of them.... maybe if I made up a business card for tellers that know us personally now could have if anything old or strange comes in? anybody else doing this or am i just being an idiot. Both answers are expected:)

That's a great idea. That's something that bank managers have mentioned to me. And also get a DBA, so that the bank can give your card to that elderly lady with the 322 Walkers, that the bank had to refer away to a coin dealer. Too lazy to get that card for myself.

i think i'm going to manage to put something together this week. can't be too hard

I easily made some cards @ VistaPrint.com...had a bunch of them shipped to me for $10

That is a great idea. I sort of already have a system similar to that where about 8 of the banks in my city have my name and number posted on the bulletin board for, any bill with a no longer used design, $1 and $2 bills (they no longer circulate and have been replaced by coins but sometimes an old timer will bring in their collection), 50 cent pieces and "silver dollars"(the old dollar coin which circulated along side the bill, none I have gotten from the bank are actually silver), and any old coins with a king on them or with a different picture of the queen.
I have gotten many phone calls from a few of these banks and have a growing collection of these coins and bills.

Canadian guy that seems likes its actually been quite successful. the banks have no problem with that? and MD how regularly do they actually call you if something comes in because i was hoping to get as many out to banks as possible.

"Yep, something OLD and STRANGE came in the other day.
Called himself Piledriver, and the first thing he did was break our coin machine."

AGBelx most banks have no problem with it. The banks that have actually called with something interesting are just happy to help. There is one bank that isn't very co-operative about it though. When I asked them about the old bills and the $1 and $2 bills they were almost insulted. They said that they can not sell me old bills because it is protocol that they need to send them back to the Bank of Canada to be destroyed. :o NOOOOOOOO was what I thought when they said that. That bank immediately became my permanent dump bank. They said they very rarely get 50 cent pieces in and they have a list of people who want them, I gave them my name and number and I am on that list but I doubt they will ever call. The other banks that set aside the older bills and other stuff for me always say something like, "some one brought these in this morning and I saw the note so I gave you a call, other wise we would send these back to the Bank of Canada". That just made me sad to think of how many of these bills were destroyed before I came along, but I am putting a stop to that. On average I get a call about every 2 weeks. That makes them due for another call this week :laughing7: .

well i'll keep you posted on how the Maine banks do with calling.hopefully they wont tell me their sending the nice bills out to get destroyed. thanks for all the info man!
HH :tongue3:

The bad thing that I see coming of this: You are letting tellers know that there is potentially something so valuable in the coins that they get that you are willing to put in the effort of printing up business cards to make sure that you get your hands on the coins first.
My guess is that once the tellers start talking about the guy that has business cards, they will wise up to what you're looking for and start keeping it for themselves.

You are correct, but the tellers at several of my banks have to turn away customer deposit of silver or collector coins per bank policy, besides that, they are already very well-versed in what is what regarding silver coin.

The card isn't for tellers to call me about what comes into the bank. It is for them to call me what their own personal stash. I created the cards because a teller asked what I was doing (I told her I'm a personal coin collector) picking up all the coins, and she said "my husband just inherited a bunch of coins. We want to sell them but dont' want to get ripped off by the local coin dealers..."

If I pay a little more than the local boys who undercut everyone and have a business to support (building costs), everyone is happy...except the local shops.

I always tell people who potentially have or may acquire old coins to come to me first for this reason. If I can pay a little more than the local dealer, I might become the proud new owner!

Excelent ideas, I've been thinking about the business cards and bulletin board posts myself for a while now. What I'm curious about, when you guys buy silver below spot but not at face do you hold onto it? Myself I'd be looking to flip it fast as I could if the coins are common date to get my initial investment back out. My problem is trying to sell the silver at spot or slightly under, haven't found many takers.
