CRH setbacks and my POS car

I've been coin roll hunting for a long time, and the more banks I make relationships with and the faster I learn to sort through coins, the more volume I do. A big part of that is learning how to juggle picking up and dumping coins during the hours I'm supposed to be working, since banks close between 3 and 4 here and don't open until 9.

Still, no matter how hard I try I can't seem to do more than about 3-4 boxes of halves and about 3 boxes of dimes a week. This week I was planning on pushing the limit to 9 boxes of halves. Two branches of a new bank both did not get my order of halves this week, so now I'm down to 6. On friday I won't be able to get my boxes because I have somewhere I have to go. Back down to four boxes.

The worst part about it is I drive an '85 with a blown head gasket. I used head gasket sealant which somehow clogged my coolant system. Before I could just keep filling up the radiator, now even if I have water in there it overheats. Literally, by the time I get to the bank my car is all the way in the red, and I have to sit there for half an hour before I can drive back home.

I understand the key to doing big volume is to have a lot of banks - this I can tackle if I had a working car. But how the heck do you juggle your time?

I didn't mean for this to be a boring "banks didn't' order my halves today!" kind of post (no offense to those who make those posts), I'm just interested in what people have to say. Have others hit a wall here? Does your car suck as bad as mine?

Of course, when I douse the car in gasoline and light it on fire in the middle of the street, I will upload the video

The absolute last thing you should do is put those quick fix products in the coolant. You may have more than a blown head gasket, could be a cracked head. Did you check and see if the coolant bubbles while the engine is running?

Pushin' an '85 around?!?! Damn! My first car, back in the late 90's, was an '88 Buick Regal. I drove that thing into the ground.

Get a new car! Problem, at least partly, solved.

This.

I feel you on the car setbacks, I recently spent $1k getting my car fixed and have to spend another $600 or so pretty soon for the front suspension. Still cheaper than car payments, which I just cannot afford right now. I also have to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend, god, life is so expensive... time to sell some silver, I guess.

Yeah, those coolant sealer products are terrible, it probably is blocking enough fins in the radiator that it can no longer work. Some new radiators are so cheap that they do not cost all that much, under 200.

I turn my own wrenches and a head gasket is pretty simple and cheap if you have the know how and time...
The car im using now i paid $350 its just a 97 cavalier but gets 30mpg sometimes it just easier changing cars

I just invested 30+ hrs into replacing the motor in my '04. Somehow it got 3qt low on oil and started doing the rod slap noise. It has never leaked a drop of oil and has been at normal level every time I've ever changed it so I didn't think it was burning it. Plus there was never any smoke from the exhaust. Where the 3qt went is a total mystery. I guess it was burning it and not smoking because of the modern EGR ???.

Dealer wanted $7400 for a rebuilt or $5800 for a used motor from a junkyard. Local shop wanted $3900 to do a used motor.

I drove to a salvage yard 45miles from my house, bought a used motor coming from a wreck, and swapped it out in my shed. It took me 2 12hr days plus the good part of a 3rd day. Now that I've done it once, I could do it again in a little more than 1/2 the time.

That distraction interfered with CRH big time.

Sounds like you have a duramax

My car is a '93 3000GT. Have considered buying a new car, if it wasn't for my credit cards, I could probably swing it easily. But I really don't see the whole point to paying $400/month to drive around when you can do it at a fraction of the price by buying some used POS. Then your costs for the vehicle drop to what? $90ish for insurance?

o2 grand am and 02 trailblazer . I use the grand am for work and bank hunting . just put a motor in with 34k on it body has 128k. year ago. now just put 500 in it and it battery , fuel pump , fuel pressure regulator....and it still has a hard time starting.....but then runs fine once it s started. had the kid running in banks todey so i didn t have to turn it off !! 3 silver dimes out of 1 brink box and 200 in cwr

From the sounds of things I assume you drive a Chrysler. You may need to shop for a good used vehicle, although they hold good value of late...best of luck.

Right now I dont have a POS (2008 honda civic, but has 155K miles on it). My last car was a '94 Lexus 300ES (ended up with 459K miles on it!) I bought it off my mom, who wanted a newer one, when it had 295K miles.

Tried to give it to my oldest daughter but she didnt want it due to the color of the tint.... we called it pimp tint! lol It was old tint and kinda purplish-black. I figure I will have my car paid off in 8-9 months and then wont have to fork over any more cash on a car for 3-4 yrs when this on reaches 300K miles. would kinda like to see if I can get it to 500K.

BTW I drive 550-650 miles a week for work in it. It gets 35 MPG on avg but have tried some Hypermileing techniques and got it up to 42 MPG. I dont have time for those techniques any more.

Holy crap at those mileages. My '93 has like, 103k on it or something.

Sounds like we're in the exact same situation, I've gotta cough up cash for an engagement ring, might have to sell some silver. My cat is also turning into the million dollar cat, his front leg joints are swollen up big, and I've already coughed up $500 just for diagnosis with no results. I am so with you on the car payments, it's just not worth it. My '85 corolla was $400 bucks. I've driven it from TX to NY to visit family, and routinely drive 7 hours round trip, at least a couple times a month. The only thing I ever had to do to it was get a new clutch kit, and also breaks and a fuel filter which I did myself. Looks like I'll have to cough up money for another beater

'85 toyota corolla. It's got about 170K on it, no rust at all. great engine, it's really too bad I went for the quick fix and screwed it up.

Based on a few posts, it sounds like the clog might just be in the radiator? that would be great if I could just change that out

love the 88 cutlass, also some of the other cars posted on here. Great minds think alike!

namster, thanks for the info, I'm kicking myself now. I'll check for bubbles in the coolant. One symptom is that there seems to be a ton of pressure building up in the radiator. For example when I take the radiator cap off, there is tons of air that shoots into the reservoir, and it takes a few minutes to stop. Sounds to me like the water pump is building up all that pressure since there is probably a clog. Looks like I'm going to the junkyard to get a radiator before I also have to get a new water pump too.

Yeh can always swap it out ...my cutlass has a new radiator in it you can watch the water flow through the fins with the cap off you should be able to see the water circulating ...you might have plugged up your heater core if there was alot of junk added to the coolant ...id make sure your eletric fan is working if thats what it uses ...some have 2 the extra comes on when there hot

If any of you guys want a break from CRH and want to work on my car for me, there might be a pizza and some beer in it for you. PM me. :laughing9:
