So, a local in-store bank has around $400 in CWR halves that I'm interested in buying. However, because I'm not a member they can only give me $20 per day. I have a feeling that the rolls are somebody's dumps but I don't know that for sure.

My problem is that although I wouldn't mind getting an account with them just to get the halves, I just don't have sufficient CRH funds. I have a total of around $5,500 in various accounts at two different banks and I really don't want to take money out of other accounts again until i get some more spending cash. I could get $20 every day for the next 20 days, but that would be a waste of gas and time, especially since I'm a full time college student.

What do you think I should do? ???

Well, its pretty simple. Either you move some money around or you just forget about that $400 in halves.

What I would do is this: I would withdraw $500 from one of my accounts. I would then open an account with this branch for the minimum amount...which is usually $50-$100. I would then buy all $400 worth of halves, search them, dump the clad, and deposit the remaining $$$ back into the account I took it from.

It seems that every teller may have a different attitude when you walk in. Try going a different time or day and ask again. You never know. Tell them you really would like to buy, say $100.00 worth or more if that was possible--and only if they ask. If they pause, tell them you are trying to collect different dates to fill a book. I do that, but I do fill books.

Just a thought,

I've never heard of this. When I stop at a bank and ask for halves they are always more than happy to sell me ALL they have. They could not be happier. I've never had someone tell me I can't buy them.

It usually goes like this...

Me: do you have any half dollars or silver dollars?
Them: How many do you want?
Me: all you have!
Them: (with a big smile) Really?
Me: Yup.
Them: THAT'S GREAT! We hate having these things here. We have to wait so long to send them in.
Me: I'll check in with you next week and see if you get any more.
Them: GREAT see you then.

Same here, theyre always happy to give me coins, Never had a problem

Yeah I'm not sure why this particular branch has this policy when the other branch a mile or so down the road does not. I'll probably end up getting an account with them, especially if they are able to order me boxes. None of the banks I've been to up here and have asked seem to want to order anything other than the new dollar coins. :(

As for canadian silver, I've found a 63 half in a roll once but that's it. Then again I haven't really been going after dimes or quarters yet.

There is a bank in the next town over from me that orders half dollars...and you won't believe this...to hand out as change.

Yes, I know it is next to impossible to believe, but they always have halves on hand.

Since I'm not a customer, they will only sell me $20 worth at a time, which is alright with me. They are String rolls, and have been skunks so far. It is also nice to see them in trays, which are easy to check while they are sitting there.

My attitude is to take what they will let me have, and be happy with it.

Just my 2 cents but i would call them large dollars

That's what I would do. I'd also tell them that you will ONLY open the account if they will supply you with coins every week. If they won't then there are plenty of banks that will.

Well, I finally folded and opened an accout with them. After some trouble with my new Wells Fargo card (ATM said savings account had insufficient funds when I had more than enough on itand wouldn't withdraw) and instead using my main one, at last I had the $460 in halves that have all but evaded me the past two weeks. ;D

...And my suspicions from the get-go were confirmed, Skunk. Definately somebody's dumps. That or just accumulated clad over the the months. :dontknow:

Oh well. It happens. At least I have another potential supplier chain for when I return home to Anchorage. Gonna dump tomorrow at my primary FCU and keep searching. Sooner or later I'll get something good. 8)
