Crop Mark & Wood...

When I joined Tnet I pledged to post every hunt, however good or bad. I wanted a 'real time' experience of UK detecting, not a show of best finds after weeks of effort

As today was the closest I have come to a blank, I will talk a little about our hunting techniques (might help others):

Sometime ago Landmag & I spoke on the phone whilst looking for crop marks on Google Earth. Everyone we found, Landmag put a place marker pin on the spot. In slow time he has tracked down each owner & signed contracts with them to include the Cru'team. Due to our professional approach, he has had a 95% 'Yes' rate. (unheard of for most detectorists)

The first picture shows a crop mark that we believe to be an Iron Age (Celtic) farmstead. We spent 1 hour today detecting up the tyre tracks, as the oilseed rape was too tall. We got nothing, but we will try again in better conditions.

Spent just another 1 hour in a wood next to a known Roman Site. Just as I was sure I would blank I found an 18th C blowhole button. At least it was a variant I need for the collection :P

A question about the crop marks. Under what conditions do they show the best? Is it easier to spot them on bare ground, growing crops or crops ready for harvest?

I know envy is a sin, but I come awfully close to it when I see the finds you make!

Cropmarks come in many different variates. If the foundations for a house, for example, remain in the ground the crops growing above will not grow as well as crops growing around them. A robbed out wall, if the trench has been backfilled with earth, will allow crops to grow well because the roots can reach further down for moisture. Other types of cropmarks can be caused by the soil being compressed over a long time ie. a footpath or road. Cropmarks are also visible at different times of the day and year, depending on the angle of the sun/shadow and how advanced the crops are. Then you have soilmarks, but that's a different story and covers glacialmarks too

Over here we or at least I, have used the same idea but in woods. I have found Three house foundations in dense woods, by the way the trees are growing

I can't be sure yet, too little land covered. The next issue is the Celts left very little metalwork behind. Its either 1 gold coin or nothing. For this reason we like transitional sites the best. The ones that continued into the Roman Period. That way we get the wealth of metalwork & a small chance at a Celtic Coin

Hopefully, Hammered has answered most of this already. But generally they show up in crops during a very harsh dry spell.

Looks like there is a little something going on in the lower left quad of that picture. Do you do a negative image as well to see anything pop out?
