Very cool point, congratulations on the arrowhead. Is it your first?

Thank you! Yes it is my first. I hope to find more. I would also like to know its history if possible.

I would post it in the American Indian Artifacts towards the bottom of the forums, there are very good people there that can help you I'm sure!

HOPE YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE ARROWHEAD. GOOD LUCK

That is a very nice point!!!They are found usually where the Indians didnt have a source readily available of "good",material ie.obsidian, flint or chert.Quartz is not very easy to work with and hard to end with a finished product as nice s yours!!

Wow! Thanks for the information as well as the compliments. That's really fascinating. I never imagined it could possibly be that old.

it predates the bow and arrow-its really a dart point.

the bow is only about 3000 yo in America
How may I ask did you come to that conclusion?????There is no size comparison, and I disagree. :icon_scratch:

That is so Cool!

I've never seen one like that before. Just imagine who was shaping that 5000 years ago.

Thanks for your wealth of information. I've included another photo for a size comparison. I hope that its of use. I labeled the 'photo' small because I had several sizes of the image on my desktop and needed the correct one to upload. The arrowhead was found in upstate SC in an area that had been cleared for a pond. Several pieces of quartz crystal were found in the area. The larger cluster was also found nearby.

Maybe it is different back east but here in the west the atlatl did pre-date the bow and arrow, and the points used on the "darts",(for the atlatl)were large. The serated edge is common in some areas out here as well

the bow was developed around the time of pottery a little before maybe. It didn't become wide spread until much latter in the woodlands period. With the advent of the bow, points became smaller to accommodate function. so called "bird points" are actually full size arrow heads for example. As for the time of development of the bow, its part of history. Pottery is only about 2500 years old in the Americans, with some of the earliest being found in Florida. Archaic hunters used darts and spears to hunt the plentiful game.
A reference:

The oldest American Indian pottery tradition recorded in the United States is located in Coastal Carolina and Georgia. Archaeologists date this ancient Indian pottery from around 2,400 B.C. Since the Catawba were in the area, they either invented pottery making on their own or were exposed to pottery making very early.

That is TOO KOOL!

Wow! That's amazing info. I'm definitely going to find the time to return and have a proper look around. Thanks!

Hi,

I stumbled upon something I believe to be a quartz crystal arrowhead. I also found a cluster of crystals not far from it. What do you think?

Thanks!
