In summer 1869, Lt. Col. George Custer and his wife, Libbie, famously held picnics and social events while "tenting on the plains" near Big Creek at Fort Hays, Kansas. These social gatherings included hosting English Lords for buffalo hunts. Elizabeth Custer, also known as "Libby," was known for her hospitality, including serving her "secret pie" during their time in Kansas.
The activities took place around Fort Hays, Kansas.
The picnics were part of the military life and social scene for the Custers in the late 1860s.
