Customer just requested a pick up and full refund.

Your right.............So why did a postal worker put this gun in my box and then later returning the box to me was also against the rules.

A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. A nonlicensee may not transfer any firearm to a nonlicensed resident of another state......

I probably should but i doubt it. They are so full of BS and red tape. I will be wasting my time and probably be required (or so they say) to tell my story to several people. And you know if no one ever claims it I will never get it back.

Dan, you have no proof that the story unfolded the way you tell it...

This is a real head scratcher. I will say that the whole thing stinks and is one of strangest things I have ever heard of.

The gun is not complete is it? Not illegal to ship most parts of a gun. It's done on ebay all the time.

On a handgun the frame is what the ATF classifies as the firearm. And in this case is what has the serial number though some handguns do have numbers on the cylinder.

Thanks, I was just going to post the same thing.

I agree, no proof but what other explanation is there? Any TV cop show writers out there with a twist on my theory?

box shipped through USPS with only circuit boards and broken ipods inside
box had my packaging tape (bottom of box) torn open (jagged edges) and not cut with knife
box arrived with over one pound of my merchandise missing and gun frame inside
box had several strips of blue priority mail tape closing bottom of box
box in hands of USPS all the time

Wow! Don't know what to make of this. Strange indeed...

Ditto twice. I agree with everyone else's assessment. It's so weird! Is there anyway to trace it through the serial number? Or do you not care anymore, whoot you are the happy owner of a new frame!

When I go to my local gun range next week I will bring it. They also do repair. Just going to get their opinion. There is probably a forum of repair shop owners.

I don't think it is a very expensive gun and I do not see a makers name so I can't buy replacement parts.

If you like rid of it i could use it for my gunsmithing school i am in

Wild. I'd give it over to the local police. It theoretically could have been used in a crime somewhere, most states require licenses for them, and with the barrell intact anything fired out of it could be matched to a crime scene slug. Not worth having.

Might be a Rohm (RG) Model 66.
Thanks for the lead. real close but not a match. It is very close to a Herbert Schmidt 21S just a couple of very minor differences.
I even found a video of teardown of a HS single action 22LR and it was even closer.

Either way I like it. I've got several bodies I'm fixing to put back together. Back in the day a lot of out of state overseas companies would model their guns off well known brands. I've got two .38 model off a s&w but made overseas

According to the government the part with the serial number is the gun. In this case the frame. If this happened at the post office sorting hub they should have known better. As you said, pistols (or in this case the frame) can NOT be sent through the mail. IIRC they have to be shipped directly to a FFL license holder and they have to go either UPS or FED EX overnight

I was wondering the same thing. I am sure they did know, but did they care?
Somebody got an empty box or at least a pound of circuit boards for gold recycling.

Question...Did the buyer say the box appeared to be busted when he received it? Does it show where he actually opened the top of the box? I'm suspicious of him mainly because the box was returned "light".

He opened the top with a knife, after he noticed the box and I told him I did not pack the gun he mentioned the bottom of the box
when he got the box these was 8 or 9 strips of blue priority mail post office tape closing up the bottom
The gun was in a plastic bag at the bottom of the box
When I packed the box it was crammed tight with boards and ipods, nothing else would fit

I used to own a gun shop & did custom gunsmithing (retired now). Likely that frame & barrel was still in a bag when the postal worker found it & they had no clue what was inside & just stuffed it all back in the box they believed it went in. That looks like a Hawes single action made in Germany. In good shootable condition it would be worth $250-300 & parts would add up to about that so putting it back together probably wouldn't be profitable. OTOH it would be a fun project looking for parts, fitting them together, etc.. You could ship it to me to give my wife a reason to send me out to the shop & get out of my chair. ;)

Based on this, I think your scenario is the best one that fits. Someone will get a bunch of broken iPods and boards and wonder what in the world happened!
