I started MD for CW relics about 13 years ago. Pictured below are some of the pieces of soldier art and carved bullets that I have recovered from CSA and USA sites in Tennessee where bored soldiers sat around picket posts and camps. Please note the little Scottie Dog that I almost discarded as campfire lead. A local relic expert told me that a soldier had taken a piece of warm lead from a bullet and shaped it into that shape. Also, note the chess pieces and round poker chip made from a bullet. I would recommend that you examine campfire lead closely. Recently, Dman found what looked like a melted bullet but after cleaning, it was a nice carved bullet. In this area, only 1 of 75-100 bullets recovered have been whittled, shaped, or altered by CW Soldiers. Regards and good hunting from rainy Tennessee.
NEW INFO- I forgot to mention that on the top row, 3rd and 4th .69 cal 3 ringer bullets notched on the base were found by me in the same US Infantry camp only 50 ft. apart. What are the odds that they were both carved by the same soldier????

Those are great finds. I highly reccomend checking campfire lead to make sure they are not carved bullets. Keep putting those great finds on TN.

Wow! The last piece anyone on my team got that was carved was the Three-Sided Pyramid bullet in this post:

Those are fantastic--and I wholeheartedly agree on double checking and cleaning up camp lead to examine it.

I have a couple carved VOL but not that many but have only been at the game seriously for a little over two year's.I've got 2 piece's of melted lead, one look's like a cow's head and the other look's like a dolphin....another piece is a flattened .69(less than an 1/8"),almost put that one away until I cleaned it and saw the ring's.You know it's lead before you dig but knowing there's piece's like your's make's it all that much more fun....never know!!Congrat's on an Excellent looking collection and HH!!

Fantastic post!

Lord, don't you know war is Hell? I can just imagine a handful of soldiers, each dressed differently in varying shades of gray and blue wondering if they will make it through the night; holding nothing but a handful of lead and a dull knife.

Sad really,

Those are very cool, Just think the last person to hold them probably was the soldier that carved them.I guess I had better go check my lead.

That is a nice carved above, almost looks like an ornate finial! Nice carved lead. Good job fellas. And I third that motion on checking camp lead. I always keep my camp lead but I put them in a seperate pile in my cases. I have let a few go in the camp lead pile before that was actually carved. And to the poster, I really like that lead "pencil" and those .69s. Nice relicS!!!!

Sentinel, It looks like a 45/70.

Here's the pyramid lead (as my buddy Kindafoundabuckle says, "Pink Floyd Lead") from the link I provided above. There were too many cool pieces here not to post the photos by themselves:
